The Saint Benedictus Abbey of Achel is the first monastery to take up brewing in Belgium since 1931, and is one of only six Trappist breweries now operating there.
This dark amber, flavorful beer is surprisingly refreshing at 8% alcohol by volume. It is lightly filtered, but still wholesomely hazy with yeast remaining in the bottle.

"Pours dark brown with ginormous, creamy head. Aroma features light malt, Belgian candy, and peppery spicing. Flavor profile includes, earth, must, molases, licorice. Complicated and thoughtful, very delicious. Full bodied and smooth with subtle warming affect. "

"Sampled from bottle. Pours a mostly clear reddish-brown with a thick, creamy head and remarkable lacing. Its aroma is rich and complex with black pepper, dark fruit and toasted malts. Balanced with a crisp, dry finish. Delicate spicy, bready flavor also has some black cherry/prune and burnt sugar. Very nice. Obscure but excellent. You've got to try it!"

"This is a dark reddish beer with plenty of brown hints, and a thin tan coloured head. The aroma is a plethora of beery goodness with hints of caramel malt, dark fruit, and alcohol. The flavour is just as tasty with all flavours coming through and leaving a nice bitter finish. "

"330ml bottle
8.0% ABV
I tried this beer on December 20, 2007 at "Smokeless Joe's" in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. The beer poured a dark brown into the Trappist chalice with a huge tan head that lasts throughout the beer, getting rocky as it slowly dissipates. The aroma is a mixture of yeast, malt and fruit such as plums. The mouthfeel was highly carbonated and full-bodied. The flavour was malt, with some hop bitterness."

"Wonderfully aromatic pour, huge, frothy white head, very nice, and much too long in coming. Color is a muddy, turbid brown, got some sediment in there. Flavor is darkly strong, but very good in terms of caramel content - i.e., not too sweet. Long finish, twisting aftertaste, wonderful!"
