"Dark clear amber brown pour with small head and a little lacing. Aroma of sweet brown sugar. The flavor was super sweet malt and a lot of brown sugar. It reminded me again of those candied malt balls you ate as a kid. Some notes of molasses. Just too sweet and the mouthfeel wasn't all that thick and creamy. Just ok."

"An excellent pour for a doppelbock, very nice one finger head that had great retention, excellent lacing. Dark brown-ruby color. The aroma was malty sweet, chocolate, some grass, and assorted bready notes. Flavor was very pleasant, definite cocoa, doughy sweet malts, spicey molasses, and a slight grassy finish with some increasing temperature. Definitely not hoppy, but a darned outstanding doppelbock, far from cloying. Mouthfeel was silky and grainy, almost like a Baltic porter in that sense. Is among the better doppelbocks I've had, although it wasn't as complex as Celebrator, and not as tempered with the hops."

"served from a typical Geman style brown bottle. Dark brown beer, with ruby tints, thick creamy tan head. Uber-malty aroma as expected, hints of cocoa and milky chocolate, cookies and creme very nice. Thick luxuriant chocolaty malts to begin with , gets slightly thinner near the end..no hops .Slightly fruity..actually quite nice stuff. Really nice palate to this beer, silky smooth..want to drink more. A very nice beer, quite drinkable , in fact a good "simple"( positive) doppelbock.

"Fresh off the boat, this issue of St. Martins is excellent. Malt, and more malt with the clean finish of chocolate. Hey, how bout some 75% cocoa to go with it. Warm alcohol aroma, thick and "warming" on a wet Winter's eve. Pleasant corbonation make for a clean finsh and you taste buds say more. 7.5%, down the hatch. Catch this while it is fresh."

"Yes, it's true, ok? I used to damn each and every Dopplebock beer to the fiery realms of the Hades...; to the very lowest of the Nine Hells....; to the worst imaginable place in all of the 666 levels of The Abyss. All that, and more, did I wish each and every Dopplebock that crossed my path, so much did I detest the style.
But as in many things, I've learned moderation as I grown older and wiser. And one of the things that I've softened my stance upon as been certian styles of beers -- yes, including Dopplebocks. While it's still a bit of work for me to power my way through a bottle, I consider it to be a worthwhile cause to increase my beer knowledge for the greater good!
"That's all well and good, schmucky, but what about the Aktien St. Martin Dunkler Doppelbock? When are you going to get around to reviewing that, you over-blown windbag?" Ah, good question....
Pours very weakly. Possibly an older sample, but it's impossible to tell the age of this. Regardless, no head, and minimal carbonation, which is a shame.
But otherwise, this beer lives up to it's quiet yet solid reputation as being noteworthy. Classic heavy-handed malty aroma, with hints of raisins in the works. Ditto for the flavor profile, which features a metric ass-load of malt (of course), with the additional bonus of being quite "chewy". Overall, tasty and satisfying.
Ok, ok, so I no longer hate Dopplebocks with the fiery passion of a thousand suns. I've learned to be more open-minded, and it's beers like this that make it all worthwhile.
