Our other famous Belgian-style offering is our Grand Cru. As with Horny Devil, it is fermented using yeast which originated in a Trappist monastery in Belgium. A darker type of Belgian candi sugar gives it more color and a richer complexity of flavor, consistent with the Belgian style.

"My wife and I opened this up to cap off our 5th wedding anniversary. Smells of some fruit candy and spices with a little alcohol. Pours a medium brown with barely any foam at all. The carbonation isn't visible, but it isn't watery thin, either, which is a nice surprise. Tastes like plums, candi sugar (cotton candy), brown sugar, a pinch of pepper, and cherries. The end is very earthy and yeasty (no surprise there). This really is quite an amazing treat. "

"Pours murky brown with little to no head. The aroma is wonderfully complex with brown sugar, molasses, dark fruit and an overall earthiness. The flavors primarily mimick the nose with the addition of a strong alcohol bite. Thick, full body with little carbonation and moderate warming affect. A big thanks to eaglefan for bringing this Alesmith to Oklahoma for Brett and I to sample."

"Sampled from magnum bottle, compliments of eaglefan583. First of all, it's ugly as mud. But get over it because its aroma and flavor are exceptional. Balanced, with spicy, phenolic belgian yeast characteristics, rich, bready caramel malts and candi sugar. Barely carbonated and full-bodied. I like it & would like more of it! Thanks, eagle."

"Beer poured really red amber, very little head or lacing. Aroma was strong and rum-like with cherries and banana. Flavor was caramel, cherries and candied sugar. Really hot alcohol flavor was not overly bothersome. Odd mouthfeel which almost seemed to cut the flavor short at the end as bubbly carbonation overwhelms the tongue. Another enjoyable beer from AleSmith, though not my favorite of their offerings.
Rerate 2007. This is much better than I remember it last year. Lots of floaty chunky yeasties. Flavor was all of the above, but less hot alcohol and even a touch of earthy coffee roast in it. Wonderfully sweet and wonderfully complex. I love me some AleSmith."

"Bottle courtesy of Black95tt: Poured an hazy dark amber color ale with a medium foamy head with good retention. Aroma of candi sugar, sweet malt and alcohol is pretty intense and reminiscent of Gouden Carolus Keizer. Taste is quite hot at first, which does not really suit my taste. The presence of candi sugar is quite evident as well as some dry figs characteristics. Yeast is totally overshadowed by the malt and the alcohol. Body is just above average but could be fuller and carbonation was appropriate. Overall, I really don’t see the big fuss over this beer and would prefer to taste a Gouden Carolus Keizer, which is similar, but more balance overall."
