Allagash Black, our new Belgian style stout, is brewed with German 2 row barley, Torrified wheat and oats, balanced by a large addition of Belgian dark candi to give the Black a full and silky mouthfeel. Roasted malts give this stout its classic chocolate, toast and malty taste, and contribute to chocolate notes and a hint of roasted coffee in the aroma. The Black is fermented with a Belgian yeast strain and refermented in the bottle with the methode champenoise to make this beer truly unique.

"It would be a better beer at half the price. $10 for a B is a little much. Looks great out of the bottle, with a nice fluffy brown head and black body. Smells of dry chocolate and roasted malt and a hint of smoke, great smell, just a little weak. Thin body, i was hoping for a little more complexity. It pretty much tasted like 2/3 dry stout, 1/3 belgian. very dry on the finish."

"Bottle from SL. Pour was wonderful, nice generous initial head with decent retention. Aroma was lovely, light yeast, gentle cocoa, nutty, well-complementing spices. The flavor followed along with some light fruity ester elements, licorice, and a toasty earthy aspect. All roast and smoke aspects were delicately present to combine with a dry finish that really made this quite enjoyable. Ally has some hit and some miss, this one far exceeded my expectations, well done!"

"Comes out of the tap a deep opaque sable with a fairly thick tan head - very appetizing. Aroma is like well-roasted mocha and has just a hint of caramel. Flavor is rich and "stouty" - smoky with strong coffee and unsweetened chocolate components - and has just a touch of sweetness. Finish is smooth and very pleasing. A winner!"

"I stumbled upon this Allagash offering at the Old Toad in Rochester, NY. The nice thing about the Old Toad is that they always have a few real ales available. This Allagash Black was one of the real ales available when I was visiting.
Served at a cool room temperature, I was a little underwhelmed by the aroma of this beer. There were very feint notes of alcohol and burnt coffee in the smell. I really wasn't impressed by this. It wasn't anything bad, it just could have been a whole lot better. The appearance was another story though. The beer was as black as night and had a creamy, 1 finger thick, beige head on it. As you drank the beer down, there was some minimal lacing left behind on the glass.
The mouthfeel and flavor built upon the appearance and were great. The beer drank silky smooth (no doubt due to this being a real ale). The beer had a very dry back end that is fairly pronounced. The flavor was that of malty cocoa, mixed with a bitter coffee flavor.
Overall I liked it and would like to try it again, this time out of a bottle. I want to see if the beer gets any better in the aroma department. Overall though, I'd recommend you give it a try. "

"Bottle: Poured a clear black color ale with a large off-white foamy head with great retention and good lacing. Aroma of light roasted malt with some medium sweet malt notes. Taste is also dominated by some light chocolate roasted malt notes with a nice Belgian-style malt backbone. Average body with good carbonation and no apparent alcohol. Not bad but I was expecting more complexity and maybe more chocolate, vanilla or maybe some ester. A bit like the Troubadour Obscura but with a heftier price tag."
