In October of 2004, we released the first beer in our series of Barrel Aged beers, Allagash Curieux. To make the Curieux (French for "curious"), we age our Tripel Ale in Jim Beam barrels for 8 weeks in our warm room. During the aging process in bourbon barrels, the beer is totally transformed, and many new flavors and aromas develop. Most notably, the beer picks up soft coconut and vanilla characteristics...and also a hint of bourbon flavor! We have introduced the Curieux at a few tastings on draft, but it is primarily available in 750ml bottles.

"Yet another Allagash brew I picked up earlier this week. Aroma on the Belgian strong ale is of light fruitiness like apples as well as some very faint peppery overtones with maybe some barnyard yeast coming through as well as some spicey funk. Appearance is a golden yellow in color with some orange as well as some haziness with a full head on top that is well-carbonated and frothy and fuzzy and a bleach-white in color and leaves lacing on the glass. Mouthfeel is a tad dry and oaky with wonderful complexity as well as balance with a palette that is smooth and wet and fantastic. Flavor encompasses some slight fruity overtones with some ripened apple coming through as well as some yeastiness with an aftertaste that is a bit caramelized with some sweetness and faint hopping going on with a finish that is crisp and refreshing as well as dry and oaky. Overall, a monumentous ale here but I did expect a darker fare as well as more bourbon notes coming through but in the end; this is one of the finest examples of Belgian strong ale I have had created by an American brewer; highly recomended brew here and I am going to invest in another bottle to age for sure...On a final note, this brew weighed in at 11% alcohol and not much of the alcohol was noticeable... "A cloudy honey-amber golden with a nice thick head. Aroma is fruity and malty with strong banana and lemon tones. The rich wheaty flavor fairly fills the mouth, and the strong hoppy bitter undertone gives it a nice kick! It goes down smoothly with a strong alcohol bite that is more like hard liquor than beer."

"A very interesting Belgian imposter. I have to admit, the Curieux was very smooth on the taste buds. Big clean flavors of bourbon, oak, bananas, yeast and apricot were most enjoyable, as were the floral and perfumy odors wafting from the glass. This hazy gold, evenly balanced, buttery elixir with the small leave of foam on the top is an excellent Belgian tripel strong ale. Good stuff, Allagash!

"Pours out in a hazy golden colour with brown edges. Rich white foam. Big barrel charcter in the nose of wood, coconut, burnt sugar and vanilla with undertones of belgian fruity esters. Flavour of wood and bourbon with notes of burnt sugar. Hints of banana and yeast. Long warming finish of wood, yeast and alcohol. Quite good but the barrel character was just a bit too much."

"(ABV 11%). Golden colour, small white head. Aroma is fruis, malts, hops and slight alcohol with some bourbon-oaky notes. Flavour is hops, malts, caramel, some slight alcohol and bourbon-barrells. Wellbalanced, and hides the alcohol quite well. Smooth and quite fullbodied. "
