A unique new beer from Allagash, Allagash Four; a one-of-a-kind ale made from four malts, four varieties of hops, four natural sugars, and it's fermented – that's right – four times!

"Ugh...I wanted to like this one. Allagash White is one of my favorite brews of all time and I figured this one would fall in line with their other products. Maybe I was expecting too much. Maybe I shouldn't have set the Allagash bar so high. For some reason Allagash came up short of excellent in my mind on the "Four".
I had this one at Max's on Broadway in Baltimore, MD. I was very excited to see something different from Allagash on tap that I had never had before. The beer was poured into a goblet. It was a nice dark amber color with a very light head on it. This head quickly shot away and left no lacing behind when drinking it. The aroma was that of alcohol, yeast, and sugar (maybe brown sugar).
The drink was slightly better than OK. There was a nice medium body to it with a good deal of carbonation. Not unexpected, but the taste was that of some strong alcohol mixed with some raisins and malt. It was slightly better than OK, but I think I expected more here. I've had better "Quads" in the past.
Bottomline, I liked this but not loved, hence the slightly above average marks. I am curious to see how this one tastes out of the bottle. I might be willing to give this one a second chance in the future, but only if I'm in a "Quad" mood and there's nothing Belgian-based in the fridge. "

"Well, I dropped by a local packy on the way home today from Atlanta and picked this fine ale up given the fact Allagash is new to Georgia. Aroma on this brew is aromatic with some banana overtones as well as some yeastiness on the nose with some light, caramelized fruits coming through as well with some Belgain candy sugar and spices and is very nice. Appearance is a deep mahogany in color with burgundy overtones and glows when held to the light with a full head on top that is a light-tan in color and creamy and frothy and remains without dissipation. Mouthfeel is full-bodied and creamy with tons of Belgian complexity as well as tremendous balance with a palate that is clean and full and pretentious and is spot on like a true Belgian quad. Flavor is full of fruity esters with some dark candy sugar with and aftertaste that is of caramel malt and sweetness with a finish that is clean and sharp and does seem to have some dark cherry or port overtones with maybe even some woody or oaky nuiances. Overall, an absolutely perfect example of a Belgian quad and and smooth looking ale here with not much alcohol noticeable and quite possibly could use some age to smooth it out; recommended!"

"So 4x4x4x4 equals...what? All the different malts, hops, and fermentation couldn't keep this beer from being mediocre. It suffers like a lot of Allagash beers do from mediocrity. There's no complexity in either the nose or the palate to seperate this beer from the others.
The nose is musty sweet, dark fruits, perfumey with a subtle clove kick to it. Appearance is medium amber in color, with a small white head. Mouthfeel lacks any smoothness. Flavor is lightly fruity, some sweet caramel malts, and brown sugar. It's missing any complexity to have this stand out. Drinkable, but barely."

"I notice this one is getting dissed a little, not sure why as I think it is fantastic. Pours a dark reddish brown with a nice balanced flavor of dark fruit...very as expected for a quad, which doesn't make it so-so, but rather makes it quite great. This is actually more refined than a Chimay blue, and is borderline as good as a Westvleteran. I'm thinkin' some folks might want to try try again. I'd put this up against any other quad I've tried and it would win."

"Another original brew from Allagash. Aroma is certainly a little on the apple side. Very little head. Seems like more head came after the pour, but its just thin and lacey. Mouthfeel is smooth and sweet. Flavor is rich with malts. I dont know how people say this lacks complexity."
