With its deep, dark brown-black color, thick, full-bodied, velvety-smooth mouth feel, mocha character, and strong yet subtle hop bite, Barney Flats Oatmeal Stout is one of the thickest, richest, and most complex stouts on the market today. In 1990, it became our first gold medal winner, at the Great American Beer Festival. Barney Flats was judged so superior to the other stouts that no other medals were even awarded in its catagory. Try it and see why Stewart Kallen described it as, "Slippery, creamy, dark, and sweet as a Pacific May morning," in his book, The 50 Greatest Beers in the World.

"When I saw a bottle of this I had to try it. Oatmeal stout, got to be sweet and tasty, right up my alley. Sweet stouts are one of my favorite styles. 12 oz brown bottle with an inviting label. Has the ol’ seducing sweet stout aroma, roasty and peculiar. Pours very dark brown and opaque in my clear steeler stein, it is almost black. Very little head, just a tan ring around the edge of the glass. First taste is creamy and roasty with a little bit of burned campfire wood in the background. It’s not jus shy sluggin gorms neemer! The bitterness does continue to build as the drinks continue. I think I am becoming proficient in bootling, the slang of Boonville! Interesting and not too offensive, I find it to be a pretty decent brew. Just goes to show, everybody has their own style and everybody does not like the same style beer. Aroma of roastyness continues as you drink it, does not fade. This brew lacks any of the offensiveness of imperial stouts and is well behaved. I’d like to have another bottle of this so I can confirm the pleasantness of this beer. The only drawback I can find with this brew is the building bitterness on the finish. It is not quite as medicine as imperial stouts or IPA but it does let you know that you just consumed a malty or hoppy brew with its medium bitterness. S4L4F2T6O17 2/07 Hides alky content well."

"Those who know me, know that I love pretty much every Anderson Valley product. Right now they are my #1 favorite brewery out there. I just struggle to find their products consistently here on the East Coast. When I do find something, I buy it up! So I was pretty pumped to find out my local bar, Quarry House Tavern in Silver Spring, MD, had the Anderson Valley Barney Flats Oatmeal Stout.
First thing I noticed about the beer was the bear with antlers on the bottle. That gets me every time. But it's more about the beer than the bottle, so here goes. You pour out the beer into your glass and from the minute you pour it, you know it's going to be a good one. It looks so silky smooth being poured out of the bottle. The beer is very dark in color and has a full, dark tan head. Compared to other stouts, I'm not sure there's a better looking stout out there. The aroma was a little on the weak side to begin. This probably had a lot to do with the beer being very cold. After you let it warm up for about 5 minutes, then you get a nice sweet chocolatey smell on top of roasted malts aroma emitting from the glass. This is gonna be great!
Once I got done admiring the aroma and look of the beer, I took my first sip. The first thing that really blew my mind was how velvety smooth this stout is. Having never brewed my own stout, I'm not sure the cause of this but it probably has something to do with the oats. The flavor is great too. There's a lot going on in there. The first thing you taste is a chocolate flavor with some espresso notes. On the back end though you taste those caramel flavored malts that seem to pop up in every Anderson Valley product. Overall, I think this is probably the best sweet stout I've ever had. It is absolutely great!"

"Bottle: Poured a pitch-black color stout with a medium size foamy head with average retention and some lacing. Aroma consists of black chocolate with some light dry roasted malt notes. Taste is also a well balance mix between some dry roasted malt notes with some nice black chocolate notes. Creamy texture is really enjoyable with some good carbonation. Very well done and well balance while still being easily drinkable."

"Bottle pour is midnight black with a short burst of carbonation that is topped with a caramel colored head that has nice retention. The aroma is of milk chocolate, hops, and alcohol. Slightly sweet chocolate in my first sip gives way to molasses, caramel, oatmeal, and cascade hops as I finish this pint. I'm sad when its done. Mouthfeel is smooth and sweet, this is a drinkable beer. Very, very well representation by Anderson Valley. I wish I had more than one."
