The Sculpin IPA is a testament to our humble beginnings as Home Brew Mart. Founded in 1992, the Mart continues to be a catalyst for the San Diego brewing scene, setting the trend for handcrafted ales. Inspired by our customers, employees and brewers, the Sculpin IPA is bright with aromas of apricot, peach, mango and lemon. Its lighter body also brings out the crispness of the hops.
This delicious Ballast Point Ale took a Bronze Medal at the 2007 Great American Beer Festival in the Pro Am category. The Sculpin fish has poisonous spikes on its fins that can give a strong sting.
Ironically, the meat from a Sculpin is considered some of the most tasty. Something that has a sting but tastes great, sounds like a Ballast Point India Pale Ale.

"Ballast Point made their oHIo debut this week, so I grabbed me some fresh Sculpin. Very dry and light IPA, definitely a West Coast standard. Huge citrus and resinous evergreen hop profile with a juicy mango and faint peach influence. Pale malts that don't contribute much, allowing the hearty hop content to do it's thing. Beautiful, sparkling gold body with a frothy white head and blanketing lacing. Nice bitterness, but it's a bit thin with a slight watery finish......too dry perhaps. All around fantastic IPA."

"A BIG thanks to Slowrunner 77 for this gem - one of many boxed up and sent to my home. I can't thank you enough! This beer was FANTASTIC! It was completely a floral hop based beer - not a touch of pine. Elegant and tasty. Drinking it, it almost didn't taste like a beer. Citrus and floral flavors abound. I am REALLY glad I got to enjoy this one - it ranks as one of the best IPAs for me (Smuttynose, Stone, Two Hearted Ale). Excellent beer."

"right at the start i didn't know what all the fuss was about. but the beer opened up. very. nicely. pours lighter than most, almost like a pale. in the end, the aroma and feel especially reminded me of Alesmith IPA (argueably my favorite) with the subtle but present peach/mango tropical fruit flavor going on alongside the bitter hops being the difference. very nice. hopefully one i'll get to revisit."

"22oz bottle -
My last great bottle of beer from Ballast Point was Dorado, which to this day is one of my all-time favorite IIPA’s. Thi is an equally amazing, incredibly tasty beer that deserves to be considered, in my mind, one of the great IPA’s I’ve ever had. Like Dorado, this tropical fruit in the aroma and flavor is simply amazing. It’s aromatherapy for beer lovers. The mangos and pineapple juice go so well with he rose petals, and lemony zing. The flavor is simply homerun. Multiple waves of juicy hop goodness...apricot, peaches, citrus, candy-like malts...some crazy pepper-like notes get picked up and grass clippings but wow. Just an intense, sensory-pleasing IPA. "
