Our award-winning rendition of the Imperial Stout style, once made exclusively for Catherin the Great. We use three mashes to brew each batch of this beer, achieving a luscious deep dark chocolate flavor through a blend of specially roasted malts. We brew it every year for the winter season. It is delicious when newly bottled, but also ages beautifully for years.

"This beer poured dark brown - so dark in fact, that the brown almost looked a shade of black. In any event, the smell was spectacular - like dark bitter chocolate, however, the taste was a bit of a let down. It was a bit metallic tasting and too light on the chocolate. I might try this again, but there are others on my list that I will be trying before I do this one again. IMO, the best Brooklyn beer is their Brown Ale - that is STELLAR!"

"This brew has been awaiting me for a few months now, courtesy of bluesandbarbq. Tonight it might have been the aroma of freshly baked coconut macaroons eminating from my kitchen that triggered the craving, but it just seemed that the two might go well together. Pours from the bottle a deep dark blackish-brown color, completely opaque, and with a thick brown long-lasting head with copious lacing. Very strong aromas of deep dark chocolate, with notes of coffee and rich dark fruit. Velvety mouthfeel, with a lingering bitter bite up top. The taste is chocolate to be sure, but in a way lighter than expected, and with supporting flavors of toffee, sweet roasted malt, coffee, and bitter floral hops. Now for the macaroon pairing: perfect! The baked sweets enhance the richness and smoothness of the brew, and bring out a latent nuttiness. The finish is long, round, and bittersweet. "

"Pours very thick and black with a brown head that settles to a thin layer, which produces some spotty lacing. As advertised, there's lots of dark chocolate flavors which are mixed with molasses and some toffee. Rich, full-bodied, creamy, and smooth. Very light bitterness and dry in the finish. Aftertaste is all chocolate. The alcohol barely shows at all with maybe just a slight trace but all that does is remind me that this is something to be enjoyed slowly. The drinkability on this thing is ridiculous. One of my favorite stouts to date. "

"SUch a high ABV (10,2%) for a stout, but that was not evident by the taste. This poured out a glorious ebony under a miniscule head, and gave up a seductive aroma of burnt coffee and dark chocolate, underpinned with the toasted malts. It was a pleasure just to inhale these intoxicating fumes. Tastes - yah baby! Rich with coffee, chocolate, and malt, it just doesn't get any better. No downside at all. Oh yes, mouthfeel and finish were grand as well."

"A very floral noise which is something of a surprise, with some citrus and some fig, the nose is almost winey. They aren't kidding about "black" this stuff is opaque even with a bare 60 watt bulb behind it. Slowly develops a nice dark brown head that is sizable and lasts well (good job considering the Abv)Good lacing. Mouthfeel is creamy and full and a bit fizzy. Flavor is predominated with alcohol, its the first and last taste. I get quite a few complex flavors, concord grape, rum, strawberries, burnt coffee in the end taste, fairly clean finish with booze burn. There is also chocolate in the mid taste. There is a sourness to this brew as well, in fact sour and alcohol are the main tastes and there is also a bit metallic in the finish. This is a brave experiment that doesn't quite succeed, IMHO but it is worth tasting. I will probably cellar the four bottles I have left and check them out in a year or so, if it mellows a bit and loses the metallic taste it will get a higher rating.
I have now noticed that BP is classifying htis as a Rauchbier and from the flavor I can understand that, the taste that I find metallic may well be a smoky flavor. The brewery itself classifies this as an Imperial Stout; they do mention specially roasted malts, perhaps this actually is a hybrid of rauchbier and stout, an interesting experiment."
