Castle Lager is a classic South African lager, built on a legacy of quality, brewing care and experience. It is a standard-strength lager with a unique taste, somewhat dry, somewhat bitter, never sweet (5% alcohol by volume).

"To think I’d drank a lot of this brew with Amstel while in South Africa in the mid 70's. The other day, I found this beer at Total Wine and More and went nostalgic. Well, in short, this is Bud’s African cousin. Pale, yellow body, weak, unimpressive whitish head with nothing left in short order. Heavily carbonated, but that does not hide the bland flavoring, weak aroma and all around watery imitation for beer. But, again, as other swill, when cold it is refreshing."

"I found this beer to be very watery. It is clear, pale yellow, and highly effervescent. The head is white. The aroma is grass. The flavour is skunky. Overall, nothing more than a South African Miller!"

"The ubiquitous beer of southern Africa; I've had many, many of these - bottle, can, draught - while in Botswana. This review is of the draught, which I much prefer. Taps a fine, dark-yellow-light-gold color with a substantial long-lasting white head, if poured correctly. The aroma is the pleasant smell of fresh grain, very subdued hops. Taste is also fresh and mellow. Adequate malt character, like your typical American lager. Nothing too outstanding or memorable in this beer, but at least no off-flavors, and the quality is consistent. It's a fine brew for most occasions, particularly in this heat. "

"Castle is a staple of most South Africans. Although it is often criticized as being "average" if you are a connoisseur then don't drink it. It is Joe Average's beer like Bud is in the USA. Easy drinking, nice aroma. "

"I tried this on July 2, 2007 after purchasing it from my local LCBO store. It poured nicely into the glass with very little head, what head there was was gone very quickly. The colour is a medium gold colour, and translucent. Carbonation is constant. The aroma is malty and was constant throughout. The mouthfeel is crisp with mild carbonation. The taste is mellow with hints of malt and grains. An enjoyable beer."
