Towering high above Central Oregon, jetting into clear blue skies, Black Butte can be seen for miles. From its base flows the legendary Metolius River--with its source hidden deep beneath ancient lava flows.
Black Butte Porter, crafted from chocolate and crystal malts, is Deschutes Brewery’s flagship brand. With a rich and distinctive flavor, this porter has enjoyed a loyal and passionate following since its first pint in 1988.

"My least favorite thing about this was the smell, there wasnt much there to speak of. Other than that it was pretty decent, Flavor was of a strong dark chocolate, kinda dry and bitter, with coffee, and a slight nutty presence in the finish. Mouthfeel was a little on the light side, but it was o.k. Overall it was a pretty good porter, thats worth a try."

"Average chocolate color on pour, subtle chocolate aroma, had trouble smelling it as I was a few sheets to the wind. I did find this to be one of the best porters I've had just yet. Rogue Hazelnut Porter has the richest and most well-crafted taste Ive had so far in a porter, but I could only see myself drinking one of those. This was just smooth, easy, yet still tasty; and also very easy to drink a couple of. well done."

"bigger, thicker mouthfeel than a lot of porters, which is why it stands out from the crowd. has all the chocolaty, roasted goodness you can ask for...not too many american porters are better. i've had this one a lot, so sometimes it's taken for granted, but it always stands out in a taste-off."

"black but clear with some ruby highlights ( like a real porter should show) Moderate cap and lace. Soft carbonation.
Nice nose of roast grains some coca and sweetness, grassiness clean aroma.
A decent new world porter...enough roast/cocoa/coffee and some nice hopping a good dose of malt verging on sweet but not getting there, nice nutty decernment, some fruity ester like dark dried fruit...longish wet finish.
A good porter in the Micro tradition and well made"

"Pours a dark brown with a thick creamy head and lots of lacing. Aroma of roasted malts, coffee and chocolate. Creamy medium/full mouthfeel. Tastes a bit of sweet malts, coffee and chocolate. Just a good solid porter."
