The Routes des Épices is a rye beer in which pepper has been added during the brewing process, lending it wonderful peppery flavours and aromas. The beer also reveals flavours of malt, fresh cereal, chocolate, caramel and a hint of fruit. In the aftertaste, the pepper flavour is once again revealed in full strength and it leaves a pleasing spicy tingling sensation on the tongue. A nice balance is attained between its spiciness and its multitude of other flavours. This beer won a gold medal (second place amongst 10 gold medal winners) at the adjudicated "MBeer" contest during the Mondial de la Bière in Montréal in 2006. The Spice route was born in our Montreal brewpub in May 2002. This beer is also brewed and bottled at our St-Jérôme microbrewery.

"Bottle from SL. The pour was a full amber, average head, laced in rings. The aroma was full black and green peppers and then some. Rich caramel and wheat type malts also detectable. The flavor followed suit, man a mouthfull of peppers, but in a very enjoyable fashion (I was surprised). The bitter wheat/rye base made for a perfect blend, hints of tomatoes also in there. Reminded me of Fantome, creative stuff here. Full mouthfeel. "

"Bottle at tasting at Chris Fischer’s (from Liars Club) house. Pours with an amber body topped by a thin to medium thick head with a good amount of lacing. The aroma is full of pepper notes with a little underlying sweetness. The flavor is slightly sweet and malty with lots of pepper notes, especially in the finish. Meidum bodied, smooth and warming."

"An amber color with an off white head. The aroma is malty with some rye and loads of black pepper. AAAAHCHUUU! The flavor is really hot with some caramel, rye, and loads of ground pepper. Why make a beer like this? Overall it sucks hard."

"This spice ale pours a deep amber color from a 12oz bottle. Medium sized white foamy head, with good retention and nice lacing. The aroma is caramel malt and pepper. A medium bodied spiced ale. The malts are caramel and sweet. The hops are earthy and a touch spicy. That is all dwarfed by the huge amount of black pepper in this beer. It adds an interesting dimension to the beer, but it just way to peppery for me. This is going to be a love it or hate it beer. I don’t much care for it, but it’s a well-made beer. Mouthfeel is full. Finish is clean and smooth. Aftertaste is peppery and spicy. "

"Wow ! A rye beer with some pepper in it. First time trying a Dieu du Ciel brew in a bottle. Really glad they are making this, as it is easier to get, then to go to Montreal. Pours a beautiful red-brown colour with a nice creamy beige head that is big, has great retention and leaves wavy lacing. The carbonation is consistent and slow enough. The nose starts off with a good rye smell, and after breathing, the hop comes out. Very smooth mouthfeel, but yet, still refreshing. The taste starts off with a little caramel and hop (well-balanced, not too sweet, not too bitter) and then goes into the pepper finish, which warms up the mouth. Quite an interesting beer, that I would definitely buy again."
