Complex ale made with raisons, belgian rock candi, brown sugar and who knows what else. Winner of the "American beer of the Year" award by Malt Advocate magazine 1999. Deep mahogany color and dangerously quaffable.

"This brew poured a deep mahogany with dark ruby highlights and a tight head that dissipated quickly. Its aroma was sweet roasted malt and dark dried fruit (raisins), oak and the hops are light and bright. Medium mouthfeel. The flavor was well advertised--blackstrap molasses, malts, toffee and nuts. Overall a very likable beer."

"Reddish brown color with a thick foamy head. I was a little concerned that this might be rather sweet, but the sugars are subdued enough that they only play a background/balancing role. Tastes and smells of raisins (naturally), and the brown sugar adds a molasses like flavor. The alcohol isn't too noticeable, but it is a real belly warmer. Didn't feel like doing much of anything after drinking this. A very nice and delicious beer, but just not something I can forsee myself drinking a lot of in the future (assuming I'll find it in CA). "Great looking beer - clear, dark copper with just enough carbonation. A sweet aroma of raisons and molasses with a slight cutting bitterness. Great taste - a slight bitter start moving to a creamy, sweet and tart finish. Stays on the tongue, but not too long. Overall, a very good representation of a Belgian strong ale and a very tasty drink."
