A unique, rich, copper gold coloured lager, Duckstein is top fermented like an ale and matured over beechwood.

"This is a copper coloured beer with a loose, frothy, bubbly head. The aroma is a balance between some malt, and floral hoppiness. The flavour is somewhat mild with hoppy bitterness comung through at the end."

"Clear dark gold body with red hints when held to the light, a quarter inch white cap that reduced to a skiff after a min. Extremely mild aroma apple, cinnamon?!?!? that seems out of place some hops and chocolate, all these aromas seem wrong but to me but they seem to work for the beer to bad its just so weak. Very drinkable brew starts slightly metallic but finishes mildly bitter, chocolate, crisp hops, dark tasting malts. This is very simple but crisp and refreshing I got to say I really enjoy this. I got nothing bad to say this was exactly what I was in the mode for. "

"500 ml bottle, as "Duckstein Rotblondes Oberbräu", bought at KaDeWe, Berlin. Seems to be brewed at Holsten Brauerei, Hamburg (my bottle), as well as Feldschlösschen Braunschweig (both Carlsberg owned). Amber colour, large and lasting off-white head, some lacing. Caramel aroma with some flowery aromatic hops, notes of brown bread too. Moderate carbonation, soft malty flavour wth some brown bread notes, decent hops in the finish. Pleasant and easy drinking "altbier" (well, it’s top fermented, and it’s German)."

"At first glance this seems like a run of the mill German import tarted-up with a specialty gimmick; a stamp-sealed cap and a wild embossed bottle with a Historic looking label that advertises "beech wood aging". In spite of all the glitzy marketing ploys, Duckstein Premium is one of the better commercial Altbiers now widely distributed by a Euro brewing cartel (Holsten).
Pours a deep copper-tea color with a light sandy colored cap that dissipates quickly into a lace that lasts the drink out. Subtle smells of sweet caramel malts, boiled grain husk and some herbal hopping.
Starts crisp like a dry Alt were the herbal-cedar snap of hallertauer hops are departed with the light peppering of the carbonation....then it gets malty and creamy on the palate and subtle tastes are detected..some light cider...rich bready malts, herbs and the beech wood barreling is detected in a musty woody taste. Then it finishes rather thinly...dry with the metal after taste of the hops. Not at all hard to take. A very dinkable old style German ale with a unique beech wood taste..."
