Eisenbahn's Defumada, very much like the famous smoked lagers of Bamberg, Germany, is brewed with a special, smoked barley malt, giving it a rich, smoky flavor and aroma. A delicious and immensely satisfying lager.

"Bottle at O’briens. Pours with a deep amber body topped by a thin to medium thick, quickly disappearing head wtih some lacing. The aroma is slightly sweet and malty with a hint of grassy hops. Not really any smokey notes. The flavor is sweet and smokey with notes of molasses. Kinda tastes like smoked salmon. Light bodied, crisp and a little dry. "

"A strong pour produces a three-finger thick, tan colored head that sits on top of a clear, dark cherry colored brew, which shows a brilliantly clear, copper tinted, bright red color when held up to the light. Even as I pour this I notice the obvious smoke influence; decidedly smoke influenced, it does have some light influences of biscuit like grain, some sweet-caramelized malt and a light toasted malt character that mixes with a rich, savory smokiness. Not overwhelmingly smoked, but enough that it quite drowns out a lot of other aromatic notes.
Lightly soft as it hits the tip of my tongue, the beer feels fairly light and it picks up a prickle of carbonation texture as it flows across my tongue. The beer finishes with a light, palate coating, heft that is caused by sweetly smoky malt character. Quite sweet actually and this helps to balance the smoke much more than the nose might have suggested. Flavors of smoked caramel, some light fruit notes from the sweet grain and a nice toasted grain profile are found here. Even the rich smokiness found here adds to the perception of sweetness, though it never gets cloying, it is most definitely a beer with a bit of heft. Up front the smoke is rich, savory and sweet, but it has a touch of a drying effect on the finish, not enough to clean the palate of the lingering malt sweetness, but enough that it is lightly noticeable.
I am a sucker for Rauchbiers, this one is quite tasty if not particularly unique for the style.

"Bottled, courtesy of omhper. Mahogany coloured with a low white foam. Smokey aroma of reminiscent of Schwarzwald ham and fudge. Salty and smokey flavour of bacon and caramel. creamy mouthfeel with a medium body. Finishes smokey with a solid sweet malt base of caramel, hints of salt. Good!"

"I love the idea of smoked beer but have yet to accuire a taste for it. This beer was mild in smoked flavor with a heavy smoke aroma. It was ok for me but fans of smoked style beers should enjoy it."
