Gouden Carolus Ambrio, the third colour of the “Great to Beer a Belgian” tricolour. Ambrio is a ‘amber’ coloured beer, brewed with ‘brio’.
In the past, every town in Belgium had its own beer typical of the area. Ambrio has its roots in the traditional beer of Mechelen known as “Mechelschen Bruynen” or "“Mechelen Brown”.
Our Brewery is the only one still brewing this type of beer. The recipe has its origin in the 14th century. The present version is a little more heavy and contains more hops.
The balance between the different malts, the fine hops and typical tastes of spices creates a perfect harmony between the powerful taste of brown beers and the freshness of the blond beers.
This fresh aromatic and pithy light-brown drink can be served cool.

"As the name implies this is an amber coloured brew which has a generous off-white coloured head. The aroma is caramel malt, some yeast and toffee notes in there as well. The flavour was a dry caramel malty flavour with a small bitter finish."

"330ml bottle
8.0% ABV
I tried this beer on April 11, 2008 at "Smokeless Joe's" in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. The beer poured a reddish-brown colour with a long lasting white head. The primary aroma was malt, with some yeasty hints. The mouthfeel was medium-bodied, with ample carbonation, and a slight dryness. The flavour was sweet malt, some yeast, and some hoppy bitterness in the dry finish."

"330 ml bottle, courtesy of Cardinal pub, Stavanger. Also available in Norway at Vinmonopolet. Amber colour, huge off-white head. Moderate spicy aroma. The flavour is malts and spices with some caramel and moderate hops. The alcohol is well hidden. Quite tasty."

"Deep amber colour (almost pinkish towards light) with huge creamy, longlasting off-white head. Aroma is apple, caramel, fudge, slight yeast and sweet fruits. Flavour is leathery (probably the yeast in this case), hoppy and caramel malts. Hides the alcohol very well. Once it gets warm the caramellishness gets a twist towards fudge. Really nicely balanced.
Bottled (6.5% version (which was replaced by the 8% after 2005)). Slightly hazy reddish amber colour with big fluffy/foamy head that lasts for a while. Leaves some lace. Aroma is sweet alcohol, quite earthy and mildly spicy. Flavour is caramel malts, mild metal, some spices and quite much earthyness. Finish is quite dry. 7 6 6 7 7"

"From a 750 ml bottle that says Ambrio 1471. The body si medium garnet with some dark copper depending on the part of the body you show. The large head is slightly off white. The aroma is sweet with cinnamon bubblegum. There is also a hint of caramel and a hint of old musty wood. The taste has some bubblegum with a little bit of over ripe pears and cinnamon spice. There is also a hint of salty leather. The body is surprisingly smooth and the carbonation is very soft. A decent ale, but I have had better Gouden Carolus brews. "
