"2006 vintage, reviewed in late 07. Lots of expectation here. Got another one or two in the cellar. This one is fresh out of the store.
Poured out a deep brown with red hues, small quickly dying tan head with zero retention - maybe a more aggressive pour should have been done? The aroma of sweet spice and caramel hits you quickly, sweet raisin, weak wood, hints of alcohol, faint cinnamon candy, licorice - reminds me of an eisbock. The taste is spicy but very easy drinking, allspice, clove, some alcohol, the spice really comes out as this warms and the caramel character tries to tame it but cannot. Slightly syrupy, nice soft carbonation and some alcohol as I breathe in. Surprisingly mellow young, we will see what this ages. See you in another year or so."

"This one poured a clear dark brown color with a relatively weak head. It had a very strong malty flavor not unlike a lot of Scottish ales, but then in true Belgian fashion, opened up with flavors of caramel and nuts. Had a nice malty finish."

"Rating 2003 Vintage - Just a phenomenal beer. Everytime I try this beer I'm impressed at how easy it ages. With this particular vintage, the beer was just as smooth as silk. So easy to drink. The aroma has big notes of sweet, caramel malts, pureed raisins, brown sugar, with some really intense vinous notes that I always enjoy. The flavor substantially gets better with each sip. Rum soaked raisins, raisin bread, toffee, brown sugar, dark candi, and some alcohol round out this beer. One of the best BSA's you can get your hands on. If you can, resist the urge to open it up and let it age for 3-5 years. It will well be worth it. "

"Aroma is fairly strong, malty and yeasty with an undertone of hard apple cider. Color is a clear, dark reddish brown with a thick, fluffy, light tan head. Flavor is malty with a hint of molasses and a fairly strong alcohol bite - not surprising since it has an alcohol content comparable to a barleywine. Texture has quite an edge to it, and the malty aftertaste has a little sweetness. An excellent Belgian, worth seeking out."

"For the most part, one can never go wrong with a Belgian Strong Dark Ale. The Gouden Carolus Cuvee Van De Keizer continues this tradition. The beer pours a very rich and dark brown with a tan coloured head that lasts. The aroma is sweet malt backed by a plethora of fruity aromas such as plums, pears, and apples. A little hint of citrusy hops rounds out the aroma. The flavour has an alcohol burn to it, not hidden very well here. The sweet malts are the prevalent flavour along with some molasses and licorice combined with a bitter hoppy finish."
