Old Ruffian is a hefty, hop-forward Barley Wine Style Ale. Seemingly mellow at the start with subtle fruit aromas and complex caramel sweetness, it quickly becomes aggressive with its bold hop flavors and huge hop bitterness. Ultimately, the big body, succulent sweetness and massive hop character come together to work wonders on your palate. 85-90 IBUs.

"Poured a clear amber-copper color with a tight one-finger tan head. Aroma was caramel, citrus and a hop character. The mouthfeel is heavy with light carbonation. The flavor is bitter hops, citrousy, and alcohol finish. This was my first experience with a barley wine--powerful impression."

"Thanks to Changeup45 for trading this to me. This is one superb barleywine. Goes down so silky smooth, but packs such a wallop of flavor. Some faint aroma of cherries, hops and a little alcohol. As I knew this was probably going to take the better part of a night to finish, I started drinking it right out of the fridge. The flavor dynamic changed so much over the next over the next few hours. As I started drinking, the OR was very neatly balanced, the sweet, caramel flavors going tit-for-tat with the pungent and heavy hops. As it warmed, the caramel flavors started to fade a bit, and ultimately gave in to the aggressive hops. All in all, this is one fabulous beer. Thanks again, Changeup! "

"Color is a rich mahogany brown, nice and clear. It pours with a nice thick tan head. Aroma is fairly strong and malty, definitely inviting. Flavor has a pretty fierce alcohol bite, but once you get past that it is pleasant, smooth, malty with caramel and fruit hints. Definitely a beer to be sipped and savored."

"Pours a slightly hazy orange-yellow with a thick, foamy head and some lacing. Good carbonation. Aromas of grapefruit and zesty hops with a sweet caramel or slight floral too. Taste is extremely hoppy with a massive bitterness that overwhelms the sweet undertones. Too hoppy for me."
