The latest acquisition “Grottenbier” was created by Master Brewer Pierre Celis. It is an aromatic dark beer with 6.5% alcohol content. In the marl pits in Kanne ( Belgium) and Valkenburg (the Netherlands), deep under the ground, you can taste the Grottenbier in a constant temperature of 11° Celsius. As it is the case with Champagne, the bottles are placed in a “pupitre” with results in an additional fermentation. This beer with a high fermentation with a second fermentation in the bottle has been pointed out as one of the best 10 present-day beers by beer guru Michael Jackson.

"Grotten poured a beautiful rootbeer brown body with tons of carbonation that lead to a massive tan head that left thick lacing. Aromas of banana, cinammon, and clove. Mouthfeel was adequate, a little thin though. Flavor was strange, no one flavor stood out and it was kind of bland. The best thing about this was its appearance, however i would be willing to give it another try in the future."

"Opened the 330ml bottle with a big pphhhht...nice bit of secondary in there by the sound of it.
Bottle has a best before of 07 07 08.
Pours dark orangy/amber, with edges of gold....off-white, big forthy head. A good lookin' beer....
Big spicy nose....cloves, nutmeg and mixed fruit. A sharp tang in the nostril too, like lemonade, or ginger ale. Some earthy, "fleshy" aromas as well.
Ginger nut, musk & clove spice continues in the mouth, along with complex malts. Hint of leather, or even a fragrant smoke/incense.
Has a medium mouthfeel, but finishes fairly sharply, leaving a spice perfume.

"I have to say that I was REALLY unimpressed with this beer. With the reputation that Mr. Celis has I was looking forward to the tasting but it was...underwhelming. Aroma was fairly weak but what I could pick-up was corn syrup or a candy sugar. Appearance was a dark, murky brown. Mouthfeel was above average but nothing exciting. Flavors were just too average for my liking, balancing on the edge between boring and bland. I could get some yeast, some malt but it was all just too boring. I will revist this beer at some time because I'm thinking the bottle I got was bad somehow."

"Bottle: Poured a muddy brown color ale with a medium head with pretty good retention. Aroma of caramel malt and slightly funky Belgian yeast is quite evident. Caramel malt with some spices dominated the taste at first and then the yeast signature shows up with a slightly funky feel. Body is quite full but could have been fuller and carbonation is perfect. IMHO, a bit more alcohol and body would do wonder for this beer."
