Fred was created to honor beer writer and historian Fred Eckhardt. Fred is a big inspiration for me and many other brewers. Fred's work in all-grain brewing and beer styles helped me become a better brewer. Fred the beer is a deep golden color. It is made with aromatic and rye malts and includes 10 different hop varieties in an effort to incorporate the whole world into this beer. It has 10% alcohol by volume and 65 IBUs. We hope that Fred will inspire you to share your knowledge with others as Fred has with us.

"Batch #63. Not sure why, but people tell me batch number is important. The beer pours a murky brown with a huge tan coloured head. The alcohol is definitely felt in the aroma, but so are some citrusy hops, and sweet malt. The flavour is a onslaught of sweet malt and then the hops. A very good beer."

"12 oz bottle, batch 56 (thanks to Crosling!). Pours a hazy golden orange with huge yeast chunks. The head is huge and meringue-like and retains well and laces the glass some.
The aroma is sweet bready malts, fruits (melon and figs), and honey with some vinous alcohol.
The flavor is sweet sugary fruits, caramel malts and some bittering (grassy hops) and warming alcohol at the finish. The mouthfeel is medium to full with nice velvety carbonation.
Overall, a well made and well balanced barley wine. It's definitely big, bold and intense. It loses some of its sweetness and becomes a little more harsh as it warms to room temperature."

"Cloudy amber with a really big booming head. The aroma is sharp with hops, a bit of phenols and caramel. The flavor is a little on the hot side, a bitterness that places itself more in the middle than the back."
