An intriguing mix of coffee, chocolate, and roasted flavors in the nose and on the palate. There is no bitterness, but sweet notes throughout to the very finish.

"Wanted to try this because of the whimsical label and different bottle shape. Very fizzy at it pours out of the bottle, but the head almost immediately disappears completely, leaving a flat-looking (there is the tiniest hint of carbonation) glass of blackness. I've never had a stout that was so fizzy before. Judging from the other reviewers, it looks like I have an off/bad bottle. The pour looks thick enough and black enough, but it nevertheless feels very much like greasy water. Smells a bit like coffee, and there is some coffee in the aftertaste as well. There is a striking taste of acidic sourness, like "turned" sour cherries. Maybe its the lactose sugar, but it tastes more like it was sweetened with an artificial sweetener. Overall, this really isn't pleasant."

"Pours black with small, tight head. Aroma has notes of coffee and raison and a faint whisky quality. The flavor is mildly roasty and pleasant. Balanced with some hops bitterness, but a slightly sweet finish. Fairly smooth light body. An unusual example and worth a try."

"Sampled from bottle. Pours opaque black/brown. Creamy, light tan head. Subtle mocha aroma. Slightly sweet. A bit of ashy black patent/black malt. The low final gravity makes this sweet stout easy to drink. Pretty basic. "

"Had to try this one, but expected somewhat more, based on the recommendation I received from the owner at Discount Liquor in Milwaukee. It was a major investment too, and I could have easily bought two other fine stouts for the price of this gigantic boggle. Pour is very very dark brown, not quite black, but certainly opaque. Head foamed up with vigor, but quickly settled, and left moderate lacing. Aroma is mild, of roasted malts, but I didn't notice any other fragrance notes. Mouthfeel is thin and insubstantial, but highly carbonated. Flavor.... adequate but not noteworthy. No complexity to speak of, just a run-of-the-mill stout, and not a very good example of a sweet stout, IMHO. At this price, it will be a memory, and not a regular presence in my inventory."

"A black pour with a thin tan head. the aroma is sweet malts, chocolate and a little coffee. The taste leans more to the coffee side than the aroma. It is fairly sweet with a little dark chocolate in the taste as well. Medium bodied, and creamy like Left Hand Milk Stout. Not bad....definitely the best Japanese beer I have tasted so far."
