"A coffee, and smokey malt aroma, mouthfeel was kinda thin. Deep brown/ black body with a thin light tan cap. Flavors of dry roasted malts, coffee, with some fruit notes peeking through. Overall it is a decent schwarzbier."

"This has to be the driest beer that I've ever had. There is simply no sweetness. It's like eating a cracker. Malt and yeast dominate the taste. The appearance is great for the style. The mouthfeel is thick and rich. The smell is of burnt barley. The taste is the only shortcoming of this beer. Add some sweetness please!!"

"BB 12/09. Pours a thick black with a big frothy tan head. the head is thick and creamy, slowly fading to a spotty layer of film that sticks around to the end of the glass. Decent lacing but not great. Smells of coffee, and roasted malt. Taste is dark coffee with roasted nuts and chocolate hints. very tasty. Mouthfeel is thick and creamy with medium carbonation. Overall very good."

"Served on-tap in logo'd glass. Nearly an inch of firm, tan head showed remarkable staying power.Color might've been a little less black in a better-lit bar, but I doubt it.
Leading with my nose as usual, the first thing that popped up from the olefactory memory in that first nanosecond was root beer, sweet and creamy. That impression passed in a half-second, but the overall scent was lightly sweet, a llittle smoky with a suggestion of chocolate.
To the lips! Exceptionally smooth and gentle. Sweet, but not excessively so. Seems to flood the palate all at once, very well balanced. The malt takes the lead in this song; the hops are the doo-wop girls, there for balance and contrast, never out front, but they'd be sorely missed if they weren't there.

"I've had this bottled many times, but this review is of my first draught, at The Malt House in Madison. A lovely ruby-tinged opaque black body under a dense, creamy tan head that coats the glass. Aromas of roasted grain and fresh deep hops give this beer the robust smells I love when entering a working brewery. Smooth full mouthfeel; medium-bodied. Flavors are lighter than expected; robust roasted malt and fruit suggest molasses, but crisp and dry rather than sweet. The finish was a tad thin and short. "
