This Scotch style ale is a very huge beer! Big, robust and bold! Often called a "winter warmer", this beer is a Scottish strong ale with an extremely rich and full body. It is best enjoyed before or after a satisfying meal and should be allowed to warm up in order to enhance its rich malt flavors. The beginning specific gravity is 1.080 and the resulting beer is about 8.0% alcohol by volume. Very filling and super satisfying...

"Pours a somewhat murky reddish amber with a nice tannish head and some lacing. A little carbonation. Aromas of malts, and more slightly roasted malts, sweet brown sugar, and hops. Taste is slightly grainy with a thick malt that is very slightly toasted then a sweet sugary-ness and some hops in the end."

"Not real sure what the heck happened with this beer. It's possible that it was past it's prime, but that's really just a guess since I couldn't find any dating on the bottle. I guess the only reason I'm thinking it's past it's prime is because it really didn't strike me as a Scotch style ale. I didn't get any of the classic Scotch petey/earthy/smokey combo I have with other beers. This beer was more or less fruity and sweet without much change in either the palate or nose from those characteristics.
The beer pours out a dark amber/brown color with a medium thick, off-white head that left little/no lacing. The aroma was a strange one. All I could keep getting was apples and cinnamon. That's it. It wasn't nasty in any way, just sweet apples and cinnamon. Flavor was the same way, with enough of the fruity sweet malts to really notice it lacked any balance. I do love sweet beers, but I don't think this was trying to be sweet. I'd like to try another bottle or on tap (pretty easy to do around here) to compare and re-rate at some point. "

"Fairly messed up Scotch ale, it's almost as if this beer is rushed through production and not given the time it deserves to ferment and age accordingly. Pours a mottled brownish-amber with a bubbly tan head that quickly vanishes and leaves no trace of it's former self. Lacing is non-existent, and the carbonation is slow and lazy. Hearty aroma of sweet malt, dry and lightly smoky with a calm organic peat quality. Smells nice and warming, but it is deceiving. Heavy and sweet on the palate. The malt feels like it hasn't quite fermented out, sickly sweet it's almost like drinking malt extract from the can. Flavor is a roller coaster of bad and not so bad, toward the end of the bomber it become more likable. Overly sweet the malt flavors are obtrusive and awkward. Honey and nuts, with a faint bitterness. It's a tough one to enjoy."

"This is a really good beer. Man alive. Very sweet and a little chewy, thick malt flavor and a little hoppinness dancing about. Reddish burgundy color, with a nice little cap of head that stays on the top. There is a bit of a sticky(?) aftertaste. Nevertheless, I do like this better than the Belhaven Scottish Ale, at least I am more impressed with it. I'd like to do a side-by-side comparison. "

"Deep caramel color with decent head and lacing. Aroma of melted brown sugar. The flavor was heavy sweet malt and brown sugar. Thick mouthfeel. This beer bordered on cloying as it was a bit on the too sweet side...did not improve as it warmed, just got sweeter. Very mild hopping and no earthy or peaty notes which I dig in my Scottish Ales. Ok beer."
