Other than being dark in color, 1554 has little in common with Porter or Stouts. The beer is fermented at relatively high temperatures using a European lager yeast that imparts a refreshing, zesty acidity. With 1554 our staff hoped to create an ale that would be easy to imagine as a beer served 446 years ago, but also a beer that doesn't ignore 446 years of brewing advancemen

"This poured a black color with a moderate beige head. The aroma contains a bit of chocolate and also some coffee and caramel. The flavor contains chocolate, dark fruit, and coffee. The beer has a slight sour presence. It has a creamy texture to it but the mouthfeel is slightly thin. Overall this is a nice beer. "

[5] Review by Cybercat from Atlanta, GA, USA who has tried this beer once. (7/9/2008 11:00:07 PM)
"It comes out of the bottle a deep, semi-transparent brown with a thick, fluffy, persistent beige head. Aroma is strong and mainly smoky, with hints of chocolate and coffee. Flavor is like liquid smoke, with touches of malt, coffee, chocolate and caramel. Texture is smooth, and the smoky aftertaste has just a whisper of sweetness. Well worth transporting all the way from Denver to Atlanta!"
