Rye beers, a traditional feature of Russian and German brewing, are little known in England. They get plenty of rich, malty flavour across without being heavy or sweet.

"Well, this will be my first ever rye beer style so I am at a bit of a loss on what to expect but I am up for the challenge, however, the cap says best before 8/31/2004 which worries me a bit. The aroma is fruity with some sweetness with maybe some apples or pears coming through and is actually not bad. The appearance is a crisp and clear light, rustic-orange with a large head on top that is creamy and frothy and off-white in color and very carbonated and only discipates a little bit overtime. The mouthfeel is light to medium-bodied with some nice and sweet complexity as well as balance with a nice palate that is very wet and frothy to some extent. The flavor is sweet and fruity with some peculiar overtones of apples and pears and other dark fruits with an aftertaste that is smooth and nice with nice sweetness with a finish that is very smooth and creamy and interesting and almost reminds me of a Belgian ale style brew. Overall, this is my first rye beer and I am happy to report I liked how it tastes and I would like to try offerings from other brewers of this style; nice concept of a brew here for sure. "

"Mostly clear although it's got yeast sediment. The color is somewhere among dark amber, copper and a light brown. The head is off-white, maybe ivory, and of a moderate size and fades quickly but incompletely. The aroma is fruity (apples) and herbal. The flavor is very bright, lemony almost like the smell of dish detergent (I used a glass that hasn't seen dish detergent in months, so it wasn't that) more of that herbal characteristic and a bit of rye keeping the malt interesting. It's like, crisp and easy drinking. It'd be a great session beer or something to drink with casual food, but it's not something to savor."

"this was a year past its date but seemed ok. no off flavors, but then again, not much flavor at all. Also a light and bubbly mouthfeel gave this a club soda likeness......Not until some sediment poured from the bottom did this wake up a little bit......A light foamy head has good retention on an amber color. Aroma is nice with nut and vanilla. Some spice and bread in the malts reminded me of a dunkel lager. I felt this had some hybrid qualities, a la 'steam beer'........Also notes of caramel and citrus. lightly sweet, with a backbone of Pub. Finish is slightly dry from the yeast but pretty bland overall."

"I've been very underwelmed in the past by "organic beers", and (perhaps to a lesser extent) rye/roggen beers. The former I often find to be under-stated and indistictive, the later often soft and unbalanced. So why did I decide to shell out $5.95 for 500mL of this today? Just `cuz.... ;^)
But seriously, this isn't too bad. If it were a little less in the alcohol, I would say that this would be a dandy session beer. Still, this was alright, indeed.
Poured this into my Nonick "Pizza Port Real Ale Festival 2003" pint glass. Classic reddish/amber in appearence, with a solid layer of foam resting on top. Thick lacing along the sides.
Slightly spicy in the aroma, with some of that omnipresent fruit (from the English yeast) in the nose. Appealing.
Not surprisgingly, the flavor profile of this beer improved, as it warmed up from `fridge temps to room-temperature. More spicy notes (from the rye?) to go hand-in-hand with the dried fruit-ishness (esp. in the middle and backend of the mouthfeel).
A little acrid in the aftertaste, and tended to get a little "same-y" after a while. That is to say, I wasn't able to find much more in the way of interesting aspects of the beer once I was about half-way done with it. That unto itself isn't such a bad thing. It just would have been nice if this were complex enough to warrant your full and undivided attention from begining to end.
A worth-while session beer overall, though a little pricy from what you end up getting, IMO...

"Orange gold color, slightly hazy. Head is medium. Aroma is malty and rye spicy with a touch of sweetness. A medium bodied ale. Malts are nutty and slightly sweet. Hops are a touch spicy. The rye flavor adds a lot to the spiciness. It’s a touch thin tasting and there is a sort of weird/harsh aftertaste that’s sort of bizarre and unsettling. Still, it’s worth trying and very drinkable. I would not want to drink it all the time. Mouthfeel is thin. Finish is slightly harsh. Aftertaste is slightly bitter "
