"A classic for members of the Legion! Old people unite! Looks decent enough. Poured out a monstorous white cap which took quite a while to simmer down to the customary skim. Lots of lacing left from this plain gold brew. Smells just wonderful - barley, slightly sweet and just enough urine to keep you coming back for more. Taste is easy enough to hammer back - tasty malts, stale apple juice and corn. Light medium bodied, good carbonation with mild bitterness. Leaves a sharp sour taste in your mouth. Now crush the can on your forehead and continue. Or fill it full of cigarette butts. The choice is yours."

"Bottle: Poured a dark yellow color ale with a very small head with limited retention. Aroma of is similar to real malt but with something that does smell like adjunct. Taste has some sweetness with limited hops. Not bad for a macro beer with some taste still present but very far from being tasteful."

[3] Review by pootz from between Calgary and Waterloo, Canada who has tried this beer many times. (3/14/2006 12:36:51 PM)
"I used to drink this when I first moved out on my own in Alberta. It was THE "cowboy malt likker" they sold at all the cabarets. My 3 roomies and I drank oceans of this stuff. Haven't touched this stuff since the mid 80s in Calgary when it was brewed at 6.3% abv. A friend of mine recently came for a visit and to recall old times he brought a case of OK extra old with him from Calgary. We cracked a few on the patio and it was a refreshing change.
I do not recommend this beer for those who like a light pilsner style beer for hot days or those looking for the smoothness of a higher AVB ice beer. This is a heavy tasting strong ale with all the rough edges that the ice process was invented to remove. This is how I remember the classic higher ABV and longer aged Canadian beers like Brador at 8% or Carrington Toby at 6% or Dow blackhorse or OKeefe Extra old stock at 6.3%
Mine poured a darker honey color, with a 1 finger white head that goes quickly. Odors of fusil alcohol and caramelized malt. Starts full bodied with lots of malty- veggie tastes then sits on the tongue more balanced as the hops kick in and you get a delightful nutty yeast taste then finishes fairly heavy with a lingering malty warmth.
This was THE beer of the 80s in Western Canada. It's a classic malt liquor from an old O’Keefe recipe for a strong ale that Molson’s acquired and marketed quite successfully in Western Canada.

"Holy smacks ! I thought this one was long gone. I thought it was now the Old Vienna. Then, in a pizza store in Montreal, I see it. Finally, I have found it here, in Gatineau, Quebec. It does list on the label that it is 5% ABV. Pours a golden colour with a good foamy-cream head with heavy retention and nice lacing. The aromas are of malt and alcohol. Watery mouthfeel, quite crisp. The taste is malty and bitter with grain and slight corn finish. A decent ale that is refreshing with a bitter edge and malt winning over corn. The original brewery (O'Keefe) used to have a big share in the Quebec Nordiques... my favorite team. Bring 'em back !"

"only available in canada on the east coast, this beer was an old o'keefe beer that molosn kept when they bought the carling-o'keefe brewery some years back. carling at one time was canada's third brewery; cnada had a big 3, labbat. molswon and c-o'k. all their beers were classy and i give molson credit for not changing the recipe."
