The Bęte Noire gets its dark profile from a blend of chocolate malt & roasted barley. The chocolate malt gives notes of coffee or chocolate, and the blend provides two flavour threads for a complex finish. The oatmeal softens the background even further for smooth, easy drinking ale.

"Bottle:
Black murky and light defying in the glass. Nice sticky mocha colored cap with great retention, laces well.
Aroma: wow! Dark fruits and double fuge with a wisp of grass....nice;
Profile is a bit of a letdown from the aroma. Rather a weak body for an oatmeal stout, but the malts in the front side are toasty-roast with coffee and bitter cocoa tastes then the finisg goes dry with astringency from charred grain hulls and the hopping...very metallic lingering bitterness.
A very good approximation of a London stout although a tad thin for an Oatmeal stout, it is very decent."

"Descent enough stout not overly strong or bold tasting this a good one just to slam back one after another. Pours such a dark brown it might as well be black a good quarter inch crown capped it off and left behind ok lacing. Mild aroma that’s seems to be made up of coffee and a berry sent, seems very creamy and smooth. Taste seems very bitter at first then turns into coffee and burnt malt, seems to have a blue berry flavor hiding at the back, this is very smooth and goes down quick. After taste is a touch bitter a lingers for a while. Ok to drink nothing to spectacular, its just a good stout that you can slam back all night long. Review done while watching Seinfeld."

"Bottle courtesy of CBA: Poured a deep black color stout with a nice light brown foamy head with good retention. Aroma of coffee and light roasted malt is quite enticing. Taste is dry with some light bitter notes from the coffee and roasted malt. Body is quite full for the style with some generous carbonation. Very well done overall and a beer that I wouldn’t mind having another glass of."

"yet another winner from Paddock Wood brewery... me and beercronic did a little taste comparison with this to the St.Ambroise Oatmeal Stout, while this one is awesome... its not quite in the class of the st. ambroise, but its still better then 90% of the other stuff out there. the beer pours a black, with slight shades of dark brown creeping in around the edges. the head is a 1 finger foamy brown, that had pretty good retention and left some good spoty lacing on the glass throughout. the aroma on the beer is of strongly coffee, roasted malts, with a smokie wood aroma. the taste is mainly malts with some coffee and caramel showing up as well. there seems to be some slight hops in the aftertaste, very faint but u can notice them once you finish sucking down a mouthful also something appears along the lines of butterscotch. the mouthfeel is a bit of a draw back for me, while it is medium bodied, rather then creamy i get a oily like feel with the beer coating my mouth like i just swished some olive oil... cant say i've expirienced anything like this... the oily mouthfeel is the only draw back for me on this beer, easy drinking and great taste so it does get 2 thumbs up, just the damn oily mouthfeel is a draw back..."
