"This is a damn fine beer. THis pours a dark brown, and as it pours, you can smell the roasted malt and coffee. There is some hoppish hints, but they are subtle at best. The flavour has a nice dry chocolatey finish.........and this isn't even their best chocolatey beer."

"Very dark brown with a good one inch tan cap, Nat say’s it looks like A&W root beer. Aroma goes as follows faint coffee, faint roast malt, faint banana, and a faint touch of sour really there almost no aroma just a faint trace of where a great aroma might have been kind of like a great civilization now whipped off the face of the earth only leaving behind ruins for us to study and we can only guess what life was really like for them, and that is how I will describe the aroma here. A bitter chalky banana and very dark tasting sweet malts combined with earth and spice, this stuff tastes awesome. There doesn’t seem to be a single trace of hops. What a great beer how the hell did the come out of Saskatchewan. This gets 13 thumbs way up. "

"Bottle 12 oz
The pour: Puts a deep dark brown lager in the glass with a pleasing 2 finger rocky cap which lasts and laces well.
The Nose: detects bready malts and a distinct "burnt toast char" also a coffee-like roast tone with some woody notes.
The delivery: Big chewy malts laced with roast coffee warmth and some sharp spicy Saaz hopping. Mid palate we get a nice mix of dark toasted rye bread, some bitter-chocolate tastes, creamy mouth feel, weedy hop tastes... then the clean finish which tends to dry out slowly and linger, light hop bitterness with a complementary but subtle roastiness in the background. Some light residual sweetness in the after taste.
The Verdict: A first class Canadian Schwarzbier which I much prefer to the Kostritzer from Thuringa.. ..This Paddock Wood brew is true to west Thuringia style..certainly a dryer cousin of a Munich dunkel.
Black Cat was very fresh and flavourful compared to the commercial imported German blackbeers available. The 5.4%ABV makes it a soothing and satisfying beer as well as a natural to pair up with Pumpernickel, german mustard, cold cuts and munster cheese...wonderful stuff to wash a big sandwich down with ...wish I lived in Calgary I'd have a fridge full of this stuff!

"was pleasently surprised by this beer... and in a good way, not in a "i just found out i have herpes" type way... ;)
beer pours a dark dark brown, not quite black has the color isnt that dark, but never the less the color is nice. the head was a 1 finger brown with some spotty lacing and medium retention. the aroma was strongly roasted malt, caramelly and even hints of banana in there. also there is an appearence of coffee, and some subtle wood aromas. the taste is strongly malt (which is what i like!!) slight hints of caramel and coffee are there, but overall this is a strongly malted beer. the mouthfeel is medium bodied and very creamy. highly drinkable... this was the last in the case i had, figured i may as do a review now, before i forgot all about it. Highly enjoyable and i will buy and drink this again and again."

"poured deep dark brown. aroma is not highly noticeable of the flavour it pronounces. didn't smell too much really. cap was decent, being light brown, that didn't last too long. light lacing. taste shows some roasted malts, bit of hops. tastes good. bits of coffee. good tasting brew."
