Rye IPA is a special edition beer first brewed in honour of Saskatchewan's 100th year. As an IPA it is almost historical in its depth of flavour- big & bold. The IPA (India Pale Ale) was originally designed to stand a 5 month trip to India and needed to be strong in both hops and ABV. This new strong IPA style is often called "Double IPA" now that usual IPA brews are much weaker. This Rye IPA is inspired by some new American styles which offer distinctive twists. Here the Rye malt adds a rich body and masks the powerful 8.5% abv kick. Malt cascades initally over the mid-palate, but is followed by a burst of hops and snappy dryness of alcohol. By the way, this special brew takes triple the malt and five times more hops than most Canadian beers. It is richly loaded with flavour. A beer to contemplate.

"Body was cloudy orangey brown very minimal head, kind a bla looking. No smell at all how that possible, there is just the tiniest faint whiff of hops but it’s so faint it might as well no been there, very disappointing for a IIPA. Nothing to spectacular in the flavor either the rye is noticeable but barely, it weird there seems to be no flavor until you swallow you can hold this in your mouth for hours and taste nothing until you swallow then it’s only a mildly sweet roast malt flavor that lingers with a slight bitterness. HELLO HOPS WHERE THE FAWK ARE YOU!!!!!!! This a strange brew to me it’s nothing like I thought it would be, it ok to drink but it nothing like a IIPA should be. If this was given to me I’d drink it no problem but I’ll never buy again."

"Bottle courtesy of CBA: Poured a deep cloudy amber color ale with a ice big foamy head with better then average retention. Aroma of medium piney and citrusy hops is dominating. Taste is a mix between some C-type hops and a big malty body with a mix between some caramel malt and some rye. Body is quite full with some limited filtration and no alcohol was discernable even though it is quite high for the style. Overall, this is a nice take on the style but would have love a bit more hops in the mix."

"Paddock Wood Variety 6 Pack, with 2 Bock, 2 Xocolatl, 2 Rye IPA. 355 ml (slightly taller) brown bottle. No screw off cap, need a bottle opener here.
Pours out a clear, deep amber-brown color. Short off-white, foamy head. Strong smell of hops to start, but also can smell the rye. A bit smoky or nutty aromas. The rye malt is also evident in the flavor. Malty, but with all the herbal and earthy hops expected from an IPA, especially in the finish. Medium mouthfeel, full flavored but still light enough to be easy drinking. Smooth, you can't taste the heat from the 8.5% alcohol. A very unique blend, the rye adds something extra, and keeps it from being the over-the-top hoppy IPAs that seem to all the rage these days. I keep looking forward to more from this Canadian brewery."
