This traditional lager is medium in body with a deep roasted character. Its dark color and rich malty flavor come from specially roasted caramel and chocolate malts. This brew is lightly hopped with Noble Bavarian hops for a soft spiciness and a smooth clean finish.

"My first schwarzbier. A nice deep black color greets you when its poured into the glass. It leaves a nice little tan head in the glass. Perhaps one of the best american examples."

"Opaque and sable, it looks like a porter or stout. Aroma is stouty and inviting - strong roast smell with overtone of molasses and a hint of salt. Flavor has both malt and hop components with smoky and coffee tones and just a whisper of sweetness. Though it does not have quite the nice thick feel of a good stout or porter, it is very satisfying and enjoyable. Very different from any lager I have ever tried!"

"This is one of the best Sam Adams beers. Pours a really dark brown with a slight white head. Smells of malt and some german lager something. NIce almost full body with a pleasing feel on the palette. Flavor is roasty and malty and full of chocolate goodness. "

"This beer pours a very dark brown almost black. It has a high malt aroma with some light coffee notes. It has a light to medium body and decent mouth feel from low carbonation. Very light coffee/chocolate flavor with the roasted malts. Overall a pretty fair offering from the folk at S.A."
