"I thought people where on crack when I read reviews of this smelling like soya sauce but wholly shit this is soya sauce labeled as beer. Hahaha what a freak beercronic just liked a few drops of this of my glasses stem when he thought I wasn’t looking. Aroma is like a punch to the face massive intensity to this. Dark chocolate that’s been heavily salted. This stuff smells salty how is that possible salt doesn’t have a smell. Maybe the aroma of salt is in reality a massive smoked chocolate bar. No sane person who smells should ever drink this, this smells putrid but still can’t give it a 2. The look on this is easy used thick greasy motor oil. When you swirl this in your glass the thick fluid that sticks to the glass looks yellow when held to the light. I’m now positive the aroma is not soya sauce but hard core smoked dark chocolate. Just had my first sip after 30 min of sniffing and staring and preparing my body for this toxic looking goo. First sip shocked me with sweetness and a burnt marshmallow after taste. Flavor is beyond intense I can only handle a couple of drops in my mouth at once and even at that my face and body contorts in pain. Cherries, nuts, salt, vanilla, burnt milk chocolate, this flavor is all over the place I could really give the flavor anything from 2-10 it changes each time a drink. Overall enjoyment is even harder it’s taken my over an hour to drink 4 oz. of this sludge and I want to keep drinking more because it’s so unique and complex but I dread putting it in my mouth. The best part is watching beercronic contort his face every sip. We just swirled the last few drops in the bottle and poured it out, thick thick chocolate syrup came out or possibly brown paint. This last sip was thick and chunky with a sweetness which cannot be rivaled. No other beer has ever come close to this horrid creation I’ll give it top marks for originality but it tastes and smells like crap. "

"K, I'm under the assumption that this is a 97? Was there a newer one? I don't know. Purchased in January 2004 in Temecula, CA. Here we go....
This is probably the worst smelling beer that I have ever had in my life but I cannot give it a 2. It is a sickeningly strong soy sauce that punishes your senses. It is unbearable. I've tried to get to a sip but the smell is overwhelming and horrid. But there is so much more to it: intensely roasted malts, heavy molasses, burnt chocolate. I guess there's maple and odd thick wood. I may vomit and I have a headache. Taste is so much more bearable if you can get past the pure intensity of this. After the first couple of sips I discovered that the only way to get some down was to not breathe in when taking a drink as the aroma is death. There is obvious vinous alcohol, brandy, thick unrefined cocoa (no where near a baker's chocolate - more down the lines of a Equadorian 70% Cocoa), chocolate dipped cherries, early on I got a blast of nuttiness, molasses, maple, marshmallow, brutally thick bock compared to something like Eku 28, this gets better and better every sip as it warms. Ultra full bodied - amazingly thick and viscous, incredible permanent after taste of the overall thickness and intensity of the beer... if you call it that. Oh, pours black which turns out to be just a dark dark brown, no head at all, leaves a thick coating on the glass, decent alcoholic legs, random chunks. Aroma should go up due to the greatness of it when it is warm but early on it's brutality is unequaled. The overall downfall of this beer is the terrible aroma that continues on as a very intense entity.
Now, for the sludge shot from the bottom of the bottle - it a glass of chocolate syrup for looks - like a glass that you never washed when you lived alone for the first time. Aroma is the same. bleeeeehjahgpioubjikj gritty taste is dryish. What a mess! My glass has glacial till and a moraine from the bottom to the rim. I think I'll see if I can find another bottle on ebay or something.... a bizarre extreme beer forsure.
Just had a mouth full of North Coast Old No. 38 Stout for shits and giggles... seriously, it tastes like a good pale lager with a weird chinese food taste and some hops.. that is it. Every other quality of the 38 is nullified by the remnants of the bock that have probably ruined my mouth for at least a day.
On second thought after a day of reflecting on the damage that this beer caused I've really had a turn around on marks as i had this 35898. There is no way in the world that I can give those marks considering how much I suffered trying to drink it. Original? Yes. Complex? Yup. Drinkable? Not even close.

"Have no idea what vintage this brew was, but this biotch must've been olde. Pours one of the thickest, chewiest bodies I have ever seen in a beer. Opaque black, no head, loads of chunky sediment, evidence of this beer left behind in a trail beer tears that clings to the glass. Resembles a port like beer, Aromas of heavy, dark roasted cinnamon, nutty malt, over ripe black cherries and dark chocolate. Oak smoke and dirt in the flavors."

"This was truly a unique beer. It poured a dark cloudy brown color with no head and zero carbonation. It had legs on the glass similar with wine. Its aroma was that of alcohol, fruit, and I detected an aroma of soy sauce. It had a sweet flavor with a syrup consistency and hints of maple syrup. I really dont know what to make of this beer."
