Originally a drink for lactating mothers, oatmeal stout was described as nutritional on early labels. Oats are in the same family as barley, and a small addition yields great flavor. Popular in the late 1800’s, the last oatmeal stout was brewed before the First World War until Samuel Smith reintroduced this style in 1980.

"Pours out of the bottle dark black with a decent sized tan head that lingers for a while. When held up to the light has a reddish hue around it. Taste is sweet with a slight oatmeal aftertaste."

"I love Sam Smiths Nut Brown Ale, so as a Christmas Treat I drived into this brew. It was nice a aromatic when opened and poured a nice black. The head was nice and tan but didnt last. The taste wasnt to sweet in my opinion but rather dry. It didnt tast so nice after it warmed up a tad but was well crafted. I dont think that I will go out of my way to try this again."

"I've had this fine brew many many times, and it's always an enjoyable treat. A nice rich black creamy ale with excellent coffee aroma. I could always use more of this."

"Pours black with a creamy tan head that does not stick around long. It does not have much of an aroma but it is a little sweet smelling. This beer shines in the taste department, with a nice creamy mouthfeel and A taste that is sweet malty and little cola and bitter taste as the end, one of the things I like about this beer, even though it is a little light for a stout is that it does not leave an everlasting aftertaste like many good stouts"

"550ml bottle
5.0% ABV
I tried this beer on November 18, 2009 after purchasing a Christmas pack of Samuel Smith ales from one of my local LCBO outlets. The beer poured a very dark brown with a 1" light brown head that lasted. The aroma was roasted malt, coffee, and nuts. The mouthfeel was full-bodied, creamy, and medium carbonated. The flavour was exquisite...and noce combination of roasted malt tones, coffee, caramel, and a bitter finish."
