Originally a drink for lactating mothers, oatmeal stout was described as nutritional on early labels. Oats are in the same family as barley, and a small addition yields great flavor. Popular in the late 1800’s, the last oatmeal stout was brewed before the First World War until Samuel Smith reintroduced this style in 1980.

"This is the best oatmeal stout I have ever had. It poured a dark brown almost black full bodied ale that had some chocolate like aromas. A brown colored head that did not dissipate quickly. When I tasted it, it was like I was having a chocolate shake, both thick and creamy. The smoothest oatmeal stout that I had with no hint of bitterness at all."

"For me this is an overall slightly-above-average beer. Aroma is pleasantly bread-like, not overwhelming. Appearance is also nice. Creamy head, nice dark brown body. Mouthfeel isn't bad, either. Mild carbonation there. Flavor, you can taste the oatmeal, with some kind of nice flavor - I'm taking it as brown sugar from other reviewers. Knowing ahead of time that oatmeal stouts were considered a medical aid in the past, and that maca extract (something you can find these days) is derived from oats, makes this not just a beer, but a must-have medical aid! Cellar a couple bottles behind your bathroom mirror! Now!
Kidding aside, this is a very pleasant beer, one that I normally buy when I don't want to drink heavier dark beers or the hop-infested lagers (I'm not a 'bitter-is-better-person - I'm a malty doppelbock lover).
A classic!"

"My first try at an oatmeal stout, i like oatmeal, and stouts, it sounded like an intriguing combination. It had a black body with a thin tan head. aroma of roasted malts, and coffee. Flavor also had the roasted malt, coffee and brown sugar, not any oatmeal to speak of however. Mouthfeel was creamy and was very smooth, with a sweet aftertaste. I will definatley give this another try."

"Pours a dark, chocolate brown with a thick, tan head that leaves persistent lacing. Chocolate aroma with a hint of coffee. Thick in the mouth with a complex taste of coffee and chocolate with a sweet aftertaste. Awesome."
