Another recently created American style, wheat wine, as its name implies, is a strong ale made with a substantial measure of malted wheat as well as barley. A close cousin to barleywines, wheat wines are typically strong, full bodied, deep gold to amber in color and feature a subtle soft tangy flavor derived from their wheat malt. A note about our Wheat Wine. The much-anticipated debut edition of Smuttynose Wheat Wine, brewed and bottled early in 2005, has not yet been released to the public due to delays stemming from the federal label approval process. The Tax and Trade Bureau (formerly ATF) rejected our original label approval application, claiming that use of the word wine in a beer name will confuse and mislead the consumer and retailers. We don't agree (barleywine, anyone?) and have appealed their rejection of our application. Ours is the first, but definitely not the last, wheat wine application the federal government has seen, so until they create new guidelines regarding the use of this name, our application will be held up, and 750 cases of Smuttynose Wheat Wine will continue to age nicely in our warehouse.

"A scrumptious brew. This beer pours an orangy-brown colour with very little head. The aroma is grainy malt, and tons of citrusy hops, and you can smell the alcohol a tad. The flavour is very hoppy with the grapefruit flavour coming through, and again, you can smell the alcohol a tad."

"Bottle courtesy of Bu11zeye: Poured a medium copper color ale with a medium size foamy head with some average retention and minimal lacing. Aroma of sweet malt is dominating and reminiscent of a regular barleywine. Taste is also dominated by some sweet malt notes with some notes of caramel and toffee. Full creamy body is well done with some medium carbonation and no apparent alcohol. Well done but I can’t say that the wheat notes were clearly discernable."

"Draught at Oliver Twist, Stockholm. Hazy pale amber with a creamy white foam. Perfumy aroma of coriander, green bananas and sugar. Clean and fairly alcoholic flavour of of green bananas, dried oranges and vanilla. Dried oranges, wheat and alcohol in the finish. "

"This wheat wine pours a medium orange gold color from a 750ml bottle. Small sized white foamy head. Aroma is orange and sweet. A medium bodied barley/wheat wine. The malts are wheaty and sweet. Lots of orange flavors. There is a touch of alcohol oiliness. Very smooth tasting. Nice beer. Mouthfeel is full. Finish is clean and smooth. Aftertaste is slightly sweet. "

"Translucent ruddy orange-amber, just a ring of white for a head. Smells of grape, raisin, grass, and something herbally sweet. While still a little on the cold side, it fills the mouth in a rush of bittersweet flavor, with a sweet alcohol aftertaste & a little bread, and I expected to like this a lot. Bold and nicely balanced, I thought. But it sweetens too much as it warms, in a grapey way, and overbalances the orange oil bitterness. Sticky. A bubblegum scent reveals itself, and the flavor becomes a little "too too." Good, but not going to be a favorite."
