This intensely dark Kulmbacher style lager has a superb malt complexity with the distinctive flavors and aromas of coffee, caramel and chocolate. A renowned smoothness and a creamy, tan head make it an all-time favorite. Malts: 2-Row Pale, Black Patent, Caramel, Chocolate, Pale; Hops: Cascade, Chinook, Mt. Hood, Tettnanger; Sizes: 1/2 and 1/4 Barrels, 16oz Bottles.

"Grabbed a pint of this at dinner @ The Ravenous Pig in Orlando/Winter Park. I'm guessing it was on tap, but could have been poured from bottle. Was really dying to try the Cigar City Brown Ale which showed up on the June beer menu, but this was the replacement for July. Has a dark brown almost black appearance with a lighter tan colored head. Wasn't that much carbonation in this one, which I notice a lot in European style brews. Thought this was a stout at the time, but may be one of my firsts in this style after further review. Has aromas and tastes of chocolate and coffee, slightly hopped. The mouthfeel and texture was a semi-creamy chocolate, but way thinner compared to something like Young's Double Chocolate. I didn't fall in love with this beer, but was definitely way above par. Would try again, but would look for a bottle at a retailer next time around."

"Pours dark brown with a small tan head with some minimal lacing on the sides of the glass. Smells a bit like a porter with aromas of coffee, chocolate and roasted malts, with a hint of licorice. The aforementioned aromas, minus the licorice, dominate the taste as well. Interesting mouthfeel, full, but not thick. For someone who is a hophead, as well as a stout and porter lover, this was an interesting brew as well as a nice surprise. Need to get some more!"

"Thanks to pfoxyjohn for this near perfect black lager nectar. Pours black with a thinnish tan head leaving some faint lacing. Some carbonation. Aromas of lots of malts - sweet, chocolate, roasted, then a semi-sweet coffee and a little caramel and finally some nice hops. Taste is rich and malty upfront with a chocolate and sweet roasted malt at first then a nice sweetness like a very mild caramel or toffee then some bitter from a coffee then slight bitter of hops. A super-fine schwarzbier. "

"Pours black with minimal head; no lacing. Light, earthy malt dominates the othewise clean aroma without the strong roastiness present in many schwarzbier. Rich, earthy malt flavor with a sweet molasses edge. Light-to-medium bodied and well carbonated. Enjoyed it thoroughly. "
