The absolute top quality in the hierarchy of the St. Bernardus beers. It is also the beer with the highest alcohol content. A dark ivory coloured beer with a high fermentation. The show piece of the brewery. Thanks to its soft and unconditionally genuine aroma, the beer can be smoothly tasted. The Abt has a very fruity flavour.

"Pours a deep brown semi-opaque tea color with a thick light tan head and massive lacing. Some carbonation. Aromas of bananas, dates, raisins, sweet malts, brown sugar and alcohol. Taste is extremely smooth with a sweet base of ripe fruits - bananas, dates - and sweet sugar with malts and a complex fruitiness and finish. Very smooth and very good. "

"This is the last of a mixed six pack I purchased from St. Bernardus. Yes, I purposely made this the last one. So this is what the #4 beer in all of beerpal land tastes like? It really does deserve it's excellent rating.
Pours a brownish body, slightly hazy and full of carbonation. A huge foamy head that leaves a lot of lacing. An excellent look! At first the beer tastes a bit winey and tart, with an alcohol rush and some malts mixed in. But it really does balance out quite well to make a very good beer. For a beer with this much alcohol in it (10%) I found it to be quite smooth and easy to drink. Don't get me wrong, you know the alcohol is in it... Also, slightly sweet but doesn't over do it and the finish is clean and relaxing. For scotch drinkers out there it sort of reminds me of a sip of scotch with a rush of flavor and alcohol and then a calm, relaxing finish to the sip leaving me ready to have more. "

"Moderate brown body. A natural carbonation helps with the retention of a foamy white head. Expectantly complex yeasty-malt nose and taste. Despite the high alcohol kick it is an easy drinkable ale."

"A beautiful semi-translucent cola brown with a thick and fairly persistent head. (Be careful opening the bottle - it foams like nobody's business!) Aroma is very strong and malty with just a hint of brown sugar. Flavor is very smooth, malty with just a touch of sweetness and a little bit of an alcohol bite. It leaves a sweetish aftertaste on the lips and a nice tingle on the tongue."

"I've had the opportunity to try both this beer and the exalted emporer of them all the Westvleteren 12.............and while it's close...I prefer this as the real King of Beers. A dark brown beer with a yeasty smell and a tan coloured head that lasts longer than the Vietnam war. The mouthfeel is creamy, full, and the perfect hint of CO2. The flavour is heaven. The monks really know how to do it!"
