"Very clear beer although there seems to be a tiny fuzz of sediment at the bottom of the bottle. This has a nice coppe/pink gold glow. The head is light and a bit fizzy. It's short-lived and fades to a small ring around the edge of the glass. It's a five color with a 2 head. I weigh color higher than head so I'm giving it a 4. The aroma is definitely nice. Pepper, cotton candy, apricots something that I'm missing the word for. The flavor is good, adds on a tad of sourness (barely noticeable). A bit cidery. I'm actually surprised by the bitterness in the finish. I wouldn't call this a bitter beer, but it's more bitter than what I was expecting from the style."

"The story behind this beer has been discussed at length by many other fine reviewers, so I won't dwell too much on the namesake of this beer, or the horrible disease that tooke his life much to early. Rather, I can think of nothing more than what I want to dwell upon than how perfectly lovely this beer is.
Golder in hue than what I normally expect to see in more traditional (Belgian) Tripels, and a lot less foam and head production, too. Unconventional, yes..., but then again, Stone seemingly never "plays by the rules", IMO.
Fragrant and spicy in the nose, with alcohol showing up a touch. Much of the same can be said at the very first sip, to the very last slurp, and all points in-between. Amaxingly clean and light, yet filling and satisfying too. Lovely stuff, and nicely warming.
Overall, this is one heck of a beer -- something that I strongly suspect I'll never see or taste ever again. While it's shame that this will never see the light of day again, I think it's appropriate, considering this beer's background and inspiration. A world-class beer that deserves to ride off into the sunset in fine form -- much in the way young Sawyer braved his illness in fine form.

"Light orange gold color. Small head. Aroma is fruity and spicy (coriander and pepper?) Orange and apricots. Bready. A medium bodied Belgian Style Ale. Not sure if it really a triple but its definitely has pure Belgian roots. Malts are very fruity and spicy. Carbonation is bright and lively. Its hoppy for a Belgian ale, but what else would you expect from Stone? Very nicely balanced. Extremely drinkable. I realize that this was a special brew, but do you think you could make more of this beer? Maybe sort of an annual thing. Mouthfeel is full and round. Finish is clean and smooth. Aftertaste is slightly sweet. Thanks to JohnC for this beer. I too hope the proceeds helped the cause."

"Originally reviewed October 3, 2003
I drove from my house in Mission Viejo down to Stone in San Marcos today to buy beer. And I’ve never been so depressed buying a beer. You can all look at Stone’s website and read for yourself about the tragedy involving Sawyer Sherwood and his loss in his battle against ALD. Since all the proceeds from the sale of Stone Sawyer are going to be used in helping fight ALD, hopefully the money being raised will save some other child from this horrible fate. As far as the beer, it pours a beautiful clear golden color with a quickly diminishing white head. The effervesence is continual. I poured this into a Chimay goblet and it looks great sitting there. The aroma is wonderfully spicey with yeastiness to it. There’s a sweet aspect to the nose. too. The flavor is slightly sweet on the tongue. You can put this up against any comparable Belgian Trippel and Stone would win in many people’s views. The texture and mouthfeel are great. It has a medium feel and it is so easy to drink. It’s another world class beer from Stone. It’s ashame that the circumstances are so tragic.

"A citrusy aroma. Appearance is a cloudy yellow with a rather small head. It tastes pretty sweet with a slight sour lemon edge. The aftertaste is a bit acidic and sort of mediciney. A pretty good beer just not alot to it."
