"Celebrating my 900th rating tonight... so went to my beer cellar, and was looking for something special. Found this lonely bottle of Unibroue 16, celebrating their 16th anniversary a few years back, and had not tried it yet. It was time to open up this baby ! Like other Unibroue strong ales, this one had a huge caramel off-white foamy head that stays forever (almost) and creates patchy lacing all around. The brew itself is caramel-orange in colour with lots of very tiny sediments floating all over. Beautiful tiny bubble active carbonation too. On the back of the bottle, 04-12-2006 is written in small. The nose is pretty much on the red apple side, with the usual Unibroue yeast and a touch of alcohol and sourness. The taste is a mix of lots of fruits, like the red apples re-appear at first, with some citrus (lemon, orange) in the middle, and a little bit of peaches in the aftertaste. All along, we find some hints of caramel and spices. Not really sweet, not too spicy and with a tad of bitterness. This beer is retired now, and that was my only bottle... so good trying you... Unibroue 16."

"A consistent brewery whose products I have always enjoyed. This anniversary magnum is similar to many of their other brews, and I find nothing wrong with that. Orange/copper in color with tiny spots of lacing, and a thin filmy head. Vibrant and well carbonated. Fruity aroma of white grapes, cherries, and lemons. Spicy and musty with a heavy yeast earthiness. Very sharp aroma, smells great. Filling and fizzy due to the high carbonation. Poignant alcohol bite that is harsh and welcoming. Flavors are mainly fresh bread with bakers spices along with grapes and some citrus fruits rounded out by a potpourri of fresh flowers. Bitter, peppery effect is noticed in the background. Familiar as are most of Unibroue's strong ales, this one was very agreeable."

"If there's one thing that Unibroue does well, it's Belgians. Strongs to be exact. A really nice pour and great aromas and flavors abound. Very similar to their Trois Pistoles and Maudite in flavor. Pours out a dark amber color, with dark fruits, spices and toffeyish malts abound. Very sweet, dark fruits dominate the flavor with some toffee and spices following up the rear. Some light mushroom notes also can be found here and there. Carbonation in just the right amount, nothing too harsh here. The one thing I find hard to discern is the difference between the different vintages, as many of them are very similar in tastes and aromas. Thankfully, all the different vintages are tasty. "

"
Tasted at the May Northern California Beer Tasting. This Belgian Strong Ale pours a deep amber brown color from a 750ml bottle. Small to medium sized white foamy head. The aroma is dark fruit, caramel, yeast and spices. A medium to full bodied Belgian Strong Ale. The malts are fruity and sweet, lots of dark fruit flavors. The hops are earthy. Nice smooth malty BSA from Unibroue. I would expect nothing less. Mouthfeel is full. Finish is clean and smooth. The aftertaste is slightly sweet and spicy.
