Truly a worldly beer. Baltic Thunder represents the Baltic Porter style admirably. Exhibiting the enticing, toffee roast of the British porter that originated the style in the 18th century, and the soothing, subtle fruit nuance of contemporary brews that flourish from Helsinki to Vilnius today, this dark lager honors the Baltic god of thunder. Created by an inspired collaboration of brewers and tempered with a touch of turmoil, Baltic Thunder rolls on to bring you enchanting light as the darkness fades.

"A reddish, black medium to full bodied ale with a brown head that lingers. Not much lacing at all. A faint aroma of bitter chocolate. Once i drank it I tasted chocolate, coffee and bitterness from the hops. At times I thought I was drinking a chocolate shake. "

"My coworker and I stopped by the Quarry House Tavern in Silver Spring, MD yesterday and tried this little nugget. He had mentioned he wanted something dark with some chocolaty notes to it. Although I wasn't sure, I figured we'd give the Victory Baltic Thunder a whirl. Both of us left fairly impressed.
The beer came from a 22oz bottle which we split evenly into two glasses. A huge off white head formed from the pour, but almost as fast as it had arrived, it disappeared. The color of the beer was a very dark black. Since the Quarry House is a dark dungeon of a place, I was not able to see any hints of other colors when held up to the light. The aroma was pretty good though. One whiff and your nose is filled with chocolate malts and black licorice. I knew at that point, I had succeeded in finding my friend the beer he wanted.
The mouthfeel was full bodied and drank very smoothly. Somewhere in the flavor you could taste a bunch of different flavors, none of which were the alcohol content. That surprised me for being an 8.5% beer. It tasted very good though with dark roasted malts being the predominate flavor mixed in with chocolates, liquorish, and even some brown bread notes.
Overall I really liked this beer and was glad we picked it out. It was the perfect finish to a long hard week in which I only worked one day. Haha. Definitely pick up a bottle if you run across this one."

"Enjoy by Date January 2009; Sampled August 2008
A vigorous pour yields a three-finger thick, lightly browned, full tan colored head in my 25cl tulip glass. The beer is almost black and when held up to the light shows a brilliantly clear, dark ruby hue. Rich notes of blackened toffee, molasses, some tamari, broiled raisins, at times some notes of candied cherries and candied figs are lightly offset by toasty notes of toasted grain, a medium roast coffee and a slight vegetal note that I sometimes get from roast grain. I definitely like the mix of concentrated, dark fruit and dark sugars that is found here in the aroma.
Rich and creamy up front with a touch of carbonation that lightens things up a bit in the middle. This is actually somewhat light feeling, as it does not have a huge body, but does have enough of one to feel a bit viscous and to allow it to stick to the palate a bit. Lightly sweet tasting, but not overly so, this accents rich fruit flavors, some touches of chocolate, a spike of molasses and a rich, dark, almost burnt, but not quite, caramel note. Fruit flavors are not as accentuated as in the aroma (due to the reduced perception of sweetness in the flavor compared to the nose), but still play a significant role in the flavor with notes of toasted figs, caramelized raisins, some prune notes and something a bit like chalky blueberries. Other flavors of chocolate beans, dusty light roast coffee, cocoa and some concentrated malt notes that lean towards an umami richness that is a bit like tamari or a hint of soy.
This beer is actually quite quaffable, which can be a little dangerous in a beer of this strength. A tasty beer, but it perhaps doesn't quite live up to the original; perhaps it is that extra 1/2% of attenuation, as this seems like it could have used just a touch more body and malt richness."

"There are some nice qualities with this one, but the body is a bit thin so it leaves the good chocolate and brown sugar flavor falling short. The color is a nice blackened ruby, though."

"(Green's Trip 08'x2) Aroma is of deep chocolate malt and some roasty overtones with some hoppy bitterness as well as some burnt toffee and some oak with maybe vanilla. Appearance is deep and rich and pitch black but a reddish burgundy when held to the light with a full head on top that is light brown in color and diminishes to thin, creamy lacing. Mouthfeel is is full-bodied and robust with tons of malty complexity as well as some hoppy-bitter balance with a palate that is thick and chewy and a bit overwhelming. Flavor is creamy and roasty with sweet malt and bready notes with an aftertaste that is a bit dry but smooth with bitterness throughout and a finish that is big, black, and beautiful and very tasty. Overall, a fine Baltic Porter here and almost an Imperial porter to some extent but in the end, I am sure the Tsars would have enjoyed this throughout the snow and wind swiped steppes of Siberia...Recommended!
