"Weißer Hase (German for "white hare") is something of an oddity for me. Was wandering around the rather unorganized beer selections of Tip Top Meats & Deli in North San Diego county, and thought I saw something partially buried in amongst the stacks of Warsteiner six-packs. Dug it out, and found a weird little boxed set -- a 500mL bottle of this weird looking Hefeweizen, and a 0,3L stemmed logo glass. Always a sucker for both (weird/obscure beers, and stemmed beer glasses), I quickly snatched this up.
Was it a great score, or just another another anonymous Germanic beer, and just another glass for my collection? Well, while I'll be keeping the glass of course, the beer itself is a touch on the boring/pedestrian side of things, to be honest.
Perhaps this was stashed away (not in a cooler) for a bit too long. The label has marks for either "Best Before" or "Bottled On" dates, but were not notched, so who knows how old this is, eh? But considering the rather flimsy head of foam, and the only basic amount of banana&clove aroma, the decidedly wishy-washy flavor profile and mouthfeel, and my rather half-hearted attempt to enjoy drinking this, I can only assume that it hit it's peak and has been on the decline before I found it.
A good buddy of mine was stationed at the small US Navy station in Augsburg, and used to go on-and-on about the local beers. While I can see some basic quality in this beer, I can't inherently give this particular sample a thumbs up. Will have to be on the look-out for a fresher sample, me'thinks....
