The Morimoto Soba Ale is part of the new Signature Series of Rogue Ales, launched in the Spring of 2003 with internationally acclaimed Chef Masaharu Morimoto--a James Beard awarded chef and one of the stars of the Food Network series, Iron Chef. Soba (also known as buckwheat) is not a type of wheat but a member of the rhubard family (a fruit, not a grain!) Soba has been a longtime staple of Japanese cuisine because of its nutritional value. Buckwheat is high in potassium, phosphorous, vitamin B (50 percent more than wheat) and protein, and its virtually fat-free. The fruits of buckwheat plant are like small beechnuts, which are milled to separate the edible groats from the dark brown hulls. The groats are then roasted and used more or less like a grain (a good example is Kasha). Morimoto Soba Ale is brewed with Roasted Buckwheat, Pale malt, Munich Malt, 13-17 Carastan Malt, and Crystal Hops. The flavor is unique, toasty-nutty sensation with medium body and good hop bitterness. Morimoto Soba Ale is packaged in a 22 ounce silkscreened bottle and available in select markets. Measurements: 12 degrees Plato, IBU 30, Apparent Attenuation 75, Lovibond 14 degrees.

This beer is fantastic if you aren't looking for complexity. It is a clean, crisp and refreshing beer. Pours crystal clear and golden. Grainy aroma. No hops. Taste is super crisp. I taste grain but no soba. I mean seriously soba? WTF? But hey man... it works. Did I mention there are no hops. They're just not here. Refreshing beer but a little lacking in the character department.

Seems yellowish, a touch of sediment, seems to be slightly skunky, smells a bit of canned corn, some apple, weak spice, wet old cinnamon, reasonable retention. Near the end it has the mouthfeel of cough syrup, makes my tounge feel like sand paper. Not much of a beer really, relatively smooth, not worth the coin to say the least.

A cloudy yellow colored beer with a small soapy textured white head that rises briefly above. it settles into a thicvk ringlet with thick film rising from the body. Citric-sweet fruit and citric bitter hops in the nose and more pronounced in the tasting. Very effervescent and crisp. Quite refreshing

I tried this beer on August 27, 2011 after purchasing at the Queen's Quay LCBO outlet in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. The beer poured a translucent medium gold colour with some slight haze and a generous off-white head. The aroma is grainy malt, floral hops, and a weak apricotish hint. The mouthfeel is medium bodied with medium carbonation. The flavour is slightly sweet, earthy, nutty, with a weak bitter finish.

Pours a hazy golden colour with an off-white foamy head with great retention and thick lacing. Big grainy scent that calms down to the buckwheat cereals with hints of fruits, lemony sourness. A little bit weird. LCBO label put on the back of bottle says 3.8%, and it sure feels like it (even says light beer) - so not sure if this is a lighter version. Light tasting buckwheat with a tad bitterness and dryness. Easy going, tastier than normal light beer with the buckwheat making it a bit more interesting.

650ml bottle. Sample in half self life. Poured a hazed gold with an orange tint. Decent sticky 2 finger cap...good retention...great lacing qualities. Aroma: demure but defined....spicy-yeasty-bready with a kiss of sweetness. Flavor profile: dry biscuity malts in front combine with herbal-spicy notes and a solid but tasteful bittering immersed in a yeasty mustiness. Fluid mouth feel turns almost puckering dry with a bitter tang in the finish. This is a good quencher ale on its own but the unique flavor and dryness screams to be paired up with Jamaican jerked chicken or steamed PEI Mussels.

It's like a nice, clean, crisp commercial beer. There's a little tangy taste that must be the soba part coming through. It's a good light-tasting beer. But it's a gourmet price - high - so I won't be buying it again. Good beer, overpriced.

an interesting spiced beer...licorice like flavors and aroma? golden with a decent body and a lingering aftertaste. nice, but not worth revisiting unless one is offered.

It pours a golden color with thin white head and some lace. Fresh aroma of the soba malt, light hops, lemon & citrus, some tart and grassiness, and mild spices. The mouthfeel is smooth, rich, and full-bodied. Flavors of the unique soba malt(hard to describe - watery and rooty tasting), hops, lemon & citrus, and some spice. The Soba taste is very refreshing going down - excellent!

Aroma of orange, spices, wheat, and nuts. The body was a hazy deep yellow with a thin fizzy cap, that leaves decent lace. Flavor was the same as the aroma with a nice slightly bitter and nutty finish. Overall it was a nice change of pace, an interesting beer.
