For Goose Island’s 25th Anniversary, Goose Island Brewmaster Brett Porter, former Goose Island Brewmaster Greg Hall, and Goose Island Pub Brewmaster Nick Barron co-created a unique new brew to celebrate the loyal fans that supported the company over the past 25 years. This special ale exhibits the rich malt and rustic hop flavors found in the English ales that originally inspired their founder, John Hall, to open Goose Island in 1988. Goose Island’s Anniversary Ale comes in at 6.4 percent ABV and will be available at the brewpubs on draught and in six-pack bottles later this month. "We wanted to celebrate our 25th anniversary by bringing back an unreleased beer called ‘Honker’s Deluxe’ that is pleasant to enjoy and a testament to our brewing team’s goals,” said Brewmaster Brett Porter. “We brewed the beer with Maris Otter malt and dry-hopped with East Kent Goldings.”

pours a deep golden brown color, with a short off white head that fades slowly and leaves a thick lace on the glass. The aroma contains earthy hops, caramelized malts, nuts and some citrus. The taste starts out a mild caramel and citrus sweetness that is quickly extinguished and followed by breadiness from a hearty malt character. The hops presence is strong but not over powering and brings a good balance. The after taste is slightly hoppy and slightly bready. The mouth feel is crisp and smooth, medium body, medium carbonation, finish is slightly sticky.

Sampled on 11/4/2013. This ESB pours a medium amber orange color from a 12oz bottle. Small to medium sized white foamy head. The aroma is fruity and sweet, caramel and bready. A medium bodied Extra Special Bitter. The malts are fruity and sweet, caramel and bready. The hops are floral and earthy. Decent carbonation. Nice balance. Very drinkable bitter. Touch of fruitiness with some crisp dryness at the finish. Mouthfeel is full and round. Finish is clean, crisp and smooth. Aftertaste is slightly bitter

This was a bitter? Deeply rich amber colored beer with a big frothy textured eggshell colored head rising robustly above. There's good hang time on this one. A big cap and thick film hang around throughout the entire drink. Grassy hop and bready malt profile. Full bodied and very enjoyable.

Pours a lovely clear tawny with a fairly thick, if not persistent, light tan head. Malty aroma has subtle woody, caramel and - cloves? - notes. Flavor is mainly malty with a firm hoppy wood note. Smooth, somewhat fizzy finish leaves a woody and malty note with a hint of caramel. Fair to middlin' but a good honk.

Surprisingly atypically mild beer for such a big occasion. This is a pleasant, easy drinking, malt forward amber/ESB. Must not be a big seller as I noticed cases being cleared out a local store for $20.

A better than average beer flavored beer but not really all that special or anniversary worthy. Typical ESB with maybe just a bit more body, flavor was good but milder than expected. Another overpriced GI that I probably won't have again.

Pours clear brown with small, lasting head. Bready malt and caramel make up the aroma with faint pine topnotes. The flavor is awesome. One of those beers where I got excited from the first sip. Rich, toasty malts playing against beautiful, perfumey floral hop bitterness. Light bodied, but not thin or watery. Drinkable. Won't change anyone's life, but I love a good ESB and this one is good.
