Ten Hills Pale Ale traces its story to Bonners Ferry, Idaho’s Elk Mountain Farms, a hop farm that has been planting, growing and harvesting hops exclusively for Goose Island beers. Like the most important hop growing regions in Europe, Bonners Ferry is on the 49th parallel and offers an ideal climate and soil for hop cultivation. Today, Elk Mountain Farms is famous for growing hops of exceptional quality. Beginning with a planting of ten “hills” of hops two years ago, this relationship between farmer and brewer has developed to a point in which Elk Mountain Farms now grows more than 200,000 hills of hops for Goose Island annually. “Idaho produces some of the best hops in the entire world and we’re incredibly excited to have such special access to that region,” said Brett Porter, Goose Island Brewmaster. “As craft beer drinkers’ palates shift toward hoppy beers, we want to highlight the creativity of the Goose Island brewing team and bring something distinctive to the drinker. Among craft beer connoisseurs, we’re already loved and lauded in the IPA style and these three new beers brewed with hops from Elk Mountain Farms will offer our fans even more to love from Goose Island.” Ten Hills Pale Ale has an apricot and tangerine aroma, tasting of sweet honey and toast and finishes with an earthy, herbal hop character. Hopped with Perle, Cascade and Saaz, this pale ale rates at a 48 on the International Bitterness Units scale and comes in at 6.2 percent alcohol by volume. Beginning Dec. 2, Ten Hills Pale Ale will be available nationwide in six- and 12-packs of bottles and also on draught through March 2014. Under the supervision of Goose Island brewers, the beer is brewed at the Anheuser-Busch breweries in Fort Collins, Colorado and Baldwinsville, New York.

I'm still on the fence with this one. Started to like it more with each sample, but then it regressed on me. Balance is off or something...and for the style it's slightly sub-par. I try to put it more in the English Pale Ale category, which seems to better fit the profile vs. APA. Has a good clean hop finish, so maybe the malt-yeast combo isn't working for me. Has potential, but there are way better ones out there.

Floral hops in the nose, apple, citrus. Medium copper body with nice rising carbonation, topped by frothy white medium head and moderate lace. Mouth has nice carbonation level but is perhaps a touch thin in the body. OK, I am fighting a cold but a fairly mild flavor profile I think. Nicely bitter at the end with a slightly fizzy finish. Well balanced but could use a bit more malt for the style. Alcohol is well masked. Maybe a touch to fruity, a little buttery which is OK for style.

Poured with a light copper colored body topped by a thin slightly off white head leaving nice patchy lace. Aroma is citric hops and sweet bready malts. Mouthfeel is light to medium bodied. Flavors are again citric hops with some piney notes and sweet malts that are more prominent than you usually find in an APA.

Pours a clear bronze/ orange with a foamy tan head that settles to a partial film on top of the beer. Foamy rings of lace line the glass on the drink down. Smell is of malt, and citrus zest aromas. Taste is much the same with citrus zest and slight herbal hop flavors on the finish. There is a mild amount of hop bitterness on the palate with each sip. This beer has a lower level of carbonation with a slightly crisp mouthfeel. Overall, this is a pretty good beer.

Sampled from bottle. Pours dark copper with a significant creamy head and thick lace. Bright citrus, floral hop aroma. Slightly bitter and crisp with toasted, lightly caramelized malts and a peppery hop finish. Zesty carbonation. A very good APA.

Beautiful amber copper pour with a medium white head and nice lacing. Orange peels, honeysuckle and bitter floral qualities in the aromas and flavor, nicely malted to offset any big bitter, still a very tasty APA, leaning a tad toward being more like an English Pale Ale as in the malts are big and bready. Could drink lots of these puppies.

Growler. Pours a slightly hazy copper with a very thick and rather persistent buff head. My sample fizzed quite a bit, maybe not like champagne but you may want a thirsty towel handy if you do a bottle or growler. Hoppy and malty aroma has a slightly sour apple overtone. Crisp, malty flavor has firm hoppy and apple notes, and a sour hint. Smooth texture has more firmness than fizz, and leaves a malty and slightly fruity finish. Go ahead, raise some "hill"!

Pours caramel with perfect clarity and thick, airy head. Doughy malts nearly balance the fresh evergreen aroma. Fairly big flavor and like the aroma, malt and hops share the stage. Medium bodied and crisp.

A amber copper in color with a big frothy light beige head rising robustly above. There's good hang time on the head. It settles eventually unto a full fluffy lacing of film and cap. Bready, pine happiness nose. Same in the tasting with some spiciness. Light, effervescent and refreshing.
