Part of #Febrewary Beau’s Pro-Am Series is a salute to homebrewers, true innovators of our craft. These beers are designed by amateur brewers, and brewed at Beau’s. Le Cœur Noir Black IPA was brewed in collaboration with Jordan Rainhard, winner of the 2013 Toronto Beer Week Homebrew Contest, and soon to be pro brewer at Rainhard Brewing Co. Congrats Jordan! History & Style Black IPA is contemporary American beer style that combines black beer colour, assertive hop flavour and aroma and toasty (rather than roasty) dark malt character. Tasting Notes This nearly opaque black beer offers up aromas of citrusy, piney hops with malt intonations, toast and restrained mocha. The overall flavour balance favours the impression of juicy, resinous hops supported by a solid malt backbone. This strong ale is robust, but the alcohol remains well integrated. Food Pairings Black pepper seared striploin with BBQ sauce, lamb vindaloo, charcuterie like prosciutto & dry cured salami, 70% chocolate pudding cakes, Strong, dry bleu cheese like Glengarry Celtic blue or Ermite from Quebec , raw milk cheddar. Almost black colour pour. The head settles to a thin foam. Good retention and slick lacing. Pine and tobacco aroma. Full flavour that lasts forever with more hops than malt, quite bitter. Citrus, pine with some floral flavours. Burnt coffee. It's worth buying more. Couldn't afford the steak so I had it with Italian sausage.

On tap at Arrow and Loon. Pours a small foamy beige head and has a fairly dark murky brown appearance. A bit of sticky lace remains. Aromas of sweet and caramel malts, a bit of earthy hops. Flavours are a bit of strong bitter hops, some earthy and citrusy notes. Good mouthfeel, very subtle warming sensation. Pretty good stuff.

On cask at the Arrow & the Loon. Pours a medium-dark brown colour with reddish highlights. The head is bubbly with minimal lacing (typical for cask). Coffee nose with fruity malt notes. Mild roasted malt with some decent hops that get a little stronger in the finish. Light dryness in the mouthfeel. Pretty smooth overall, which means the alcohol is well-hidden. Gets stronger all-around with time, so good to drink slowly.
