Old Foghorn® Barleywine Style Ale is brewed strictly according to traditional brewing methods, using only natural ingredients — water, malted barley, fresh whole hops, and yeast. Old Foghorn is based on traditional English barley wines. Old Foghorn is highly hopped, using only Cascade hops. It is fermented with a true top-fermenting ale yeast. Carbonation is produced by an entirely natural process called "bunging," which produces champagne-like bubbles. Our "barleywine ale" is dry-hopped with additional Cascade hops while it ages in our cellars.

This beer pours a clear copper. The head is off-white, frothy, and lasts a while leaving decent lacing. Aroma is sweet malt, bread, molasses, earthy hops, and alcohol. The mouthfeel is full bodied. The flavor is similar to an IPA with extra alcohol. The malts are very sweet, and the finish is quite bitter.

Pours a dark golden brown with a fast dissipating head. Aroma is of port wine and malt. The mouthfeel is good and thick. The flavor is not biter from hops but just a little bit from the alcohol.

Nice light brown in color, poured a decent carbonation. Smell was alcohol, taste was great at first-followed by bitter alcohol notes. Not that good overall, but worth a try once.

Strong, fruity aroma is rather sweet but not cloying, and has an overtone of molasses plus a firm hint of honey. It pours a beautiful clear mahogany-copper with a thick, fluffy, pale copper-tan head that leaves a fair amount of lacing. Sweet, fruity flavor has tones of honey and caramel, as well as a noticeable, if not fierce, alcohol bite that nicely offsets the sweetness. Texture has good body and an OK amount of fizz. Sound the foghorn and pour this one down the hatch!

12oz bottle. Pours a clear light ruby brown with a huge rocky off white head that retains well and laces the glass.

The aroma is a bit subdued - caramel malts, molasses, dark fruits with some resiny hops and a bit of wood and alcohol.

The flavor is sweet fruity (plum) sugary/molasses malts with some bitterness and an alcoholic burn in the finish. The mouthfeel is medium to full bodied with low carbonation.

Overall, a very nice barley wine. It's a bit young with some big sweetness battling some harsh alcohol. But it's still good now. I'd love to try this aged.

Been hording this one since it was acquired in a fall 2009 trade with slowrunner77. Batch 9UY. It is time for the Foghorn. Amber pour with minimal head and sporadic lacing. Aromas of caramel and toffee, slight alcohol and a hint of clove or mint, earthy hops. Taste is caramelly sweet and hoppy with a nice bitter in the end. Nice - thanks Chris.

Malt forward barleywine. Plenty of sweetness along with mixed fruits, nuts, toffee and bread. Great aroma that's aromatic and inviting. Dark copper body with a good sized head and plenty of lacing. Lighter and drier than I was expecting, and it was exceptionally smooth and drinkable. I believe the bottle was aged somewhere around one year.

8.8%- I found this to be a bit too sweet. They are calling it "barleywine-style ale"....on the lighter side for a true barleywine. Light brown reddish appearance. Not that much carbonation which gives it a smooth, flatter mouthfeel. Flavor has some potential if balanced a little better, but either way was tasty.....just thought the sweetness could be toned down a bit. Maybe adding a bit more hops to the recipe would help? I have been liking Anchors beers, but will be looking elsewhere for my "barleywines".

Second American Barleywine rated that night (in Toronto - a while back)... Rogue Old Crustacean being the other. Pours a mild-hazy amber brown colour with a small head that is yellowish, with not much retention, a little ring around the glass and no lacing. The aromas are nutty and fruity. Very smooth mouthfeel with almost no alcohol felt. Very nice tiny bubble carbonation. Beautiful taste of malt and fruit with a mild bitter aftertaste. A very pleasant Barleywine from an American brewer I really enjoy.

This was my first Barley wine. It smelled of hearty wine but the taste went another way. It appearance was nice with a burgundy and a pinkish head that went away quickly. The taste was alcoholic and malty. Most say it has a hoppy finish but I did not get this. Not a type that I think I will make a permanent fixture in my collection.
